Facebook Beats Google For The First Time

Beating Google at anything is good news for any company, but dethroning Google as the most visited site in the US is certainly a feat that any company would trumpet. Who was the culprit? Well, it should be no surprise to anyone to take in that it’s Facebook. According to industry tracker Hitwise, Facebook enjoyed a healthy 185 percent increase in visits, while Google only got a 9 percent increase. That being said, the tracker did not include Google property sites such as Gmail, YouTube and Google Maps. It looks like Google has many challenges ahead of it, what with Facebook, Apple, Twitter and Microsoft all looking to dethrone the search engine giant on the Web.

Twitter announces @Platform for web publishers

March 15, 2010

Twitter announces @Platform

Twitter just announced @Platform, a new way for websites to embed and use Twitter to ultimately bring more views back to them. It allows readers to follow an author directly from an spread page, without having to go to Twitter. The Twitter folks know that they need a better way than apps to distribute their service and it looks like that is it. Twitter has already found a number of high-profile partners like Amazon, YouTube, Yahoo, Bing, Digg, eBay and more - but anyone should be able to add Twitter to a website. We’re still live with Twitter at SXSW.

Mio Moov V780 packed to the brim with features

Mio Moov V780 packed to the brim with features

The Mio Moov V780 might dub itself to be a navigation device, but in reality it does much more than just getting you from point A to point B in the fastest manner possible. You will find that to be a decent portable media player with 720p HD playback, the ability to stream High Definition video via HDMI, support for digital TV, web browsing capability, newsletter functionality, YouTube playback, an image viewer and music player. Hardware specifications include a 7" TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen display at 800 x 480 resolution, a 600MHz processor, 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal storage with a microSD memory card slot for future expansion aspirations. Too poor all of that seems rather restricted by the use of Windows CE 6.0 as the operating system of choice, alongside Net Explorer 6. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to connectivity options though with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and optional 3.5G and WiMAX.

YouTube ends IE6 support soon

YouTube ends IE6 support soon

Google's YouTube vidoe service is touted to stop Web Explorer 6 (IE6) support come that March 13th, although they did not state it directly, they did mention that "users will still be able to watch YouTube on IE6. As the Web evolves, our goal is to keep up by making YouTube a richer, faster, and more dynamic experience for everyone." Apparently, "old browsers" would mean any release before IE7, Firefox 3.0, Chrome 4.0, or Safari 3.0. Guess no tears will be lost on that news for Microsoft though.

Qualcomm Snapdragon running Flash 10.1

February 16, 2010

Qualcomm Snapdragon running Flash 10.1

[MWC 2010] Qualcomm was showing new demos for its Snapdragon platform. I was particularly interested in the Flash 10.1 demo considering it was the first day that I could see a decent implementation running on a handheld device, inside a browser. I could not pop quiz sites like Hulu or Youtube, but the vector graphics seemed to perform relatively well. Flash playback is probably the last frontier in terms of “full web” support. On another note, I have been told by Adobe that they are working closely with Microsoft on the upcoming mobile products. Qualcomm was touted as an critical partner for Windows Phone 7 Series. So will 2010 be the year when Flash will be fully supported by handsets?
