Symbian 3 gets new design goes further than skin deep

Nokia has made it clear that it will revamp the user interface (UI) of its Symbian phones, and you might have seen the video above during Mobile World Congress. However, what's more interesting is that Nokia has removed a ton of legacy cipher and APIs, to form the clean break that was faraway overdue. We're getting closer to what was available on the N900 and some of the qualities are the same (the app switching UI is excellent), but the new UI is seemingly much faster and more fluid. With the new software architecture, comes new cipher that is not built to deal with last decade's problems such as lack of graphics hardware or horrible memory constraints.
The net conclusion should be much more responsive Nokia phones and interfaces. I'm glad that Nokia (and others) are seeing the light, considering Apple and Microsoft certain did too. Now, we're waiting for the actual hardware that we suspect might come out that summer at Nokia World.

Motonav N765t Unboxing

We played with the Motonav N765 at Mobile World Congress (MWC), but we now have one in the office, as Motorola prepares to launch it in the U.S. For a quick overview of the functionalities, you can refer to our MWC post. right now, we want to share with you an unboxing photo gallery and a quick first impression of the physical aspect of the device along with a little more data.
The Motonav N765t (N700 Series) has a very wide 5.1" display. that is so wide that Motorola calls it "cinematic". Having such a screen allows Motorola to display additional knowledge, while leaving the map visible at all times (you're trying to get somewhere after all). The display surface has a non-glossy treatment that helps in direct sunlight.

Motorola QUENCH heads for North America

Folks living on the continent of North America will be able to get hold of the Motorola QUENCH - particularly folks living in Canada as distant as they're happy with Rogers' terms and conditions. First announced at the Mobile World Congress last month, the Motorola QUENCH will be released in the US as the Motorola CLIQ XT. Released Stateside that month on T-Mobile, it will additionally reach in Europe later that year going by the Canadian moniker.

Windows Phone 7 Sheds Backwards Compatibility

After having face to face talks with Microsoft, we have learned that Windows Phone 7 won't run any Windows Mobile 6.x (and earlier) applications. The lack of compatibility talks during the Mobile World Congress made us think that that was the case, but now that is official.
Microsoft says that it had to do a clean break for the greater good - and they are probably right. certain it's annoying to the 6.x app developer considering they will have to do some work (possibly a lot) to invent their app work on Windows Phone 7, but that basically prevents the "easy way" of just leaving things the way they were.
Microsoft is counting on XNA, the popular platform for Indie and casual game on Xbox, Silverlight and .NET to be the foundation of most of the development. Microsoft did not want to comment on whether or not a C++ and DirectX approach was possible. More details will be revealed next week at the Game Developers Conference and on March at MIX, a Microsoft event.

Innocomm Shark, Shadow, Scorpion And Gemini Android Phones

A company called Innocomm was showing off an Android-powered phone back in Mobile World Congress, but now it seems that the company is busy working on some newer Android-powered devices, dubbed the Innocomm Shark, Shadow, Scorpion and Gemini. The names of the phones certainly seem rather fierce, and hopefully that will translate to some killer specs. According to the company’s sales manager, the Shark is slated for release in May or June, and will sport features such as:
- 3.2-inch touchscreen
- 800 x 400 pixel resolution
- 8MP camera with flash
- 3.5mm headset jack
- microSD slot up to 32GB
- GPS, 3G, HSPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
- 115 x 58 x 12.5 mm
- Analog TV Receiver
- Digital TV Receiver in a future model

Mobile World Congress 2010 in a nutshell

If you have not followed the detailed (or even live) coverage of Mobile World Congress, that post will give you a quick overview of things that we found particularly interesting.
New handsets: “mini” is fashionable again!
Although there were surprisingly few new handset announced by major handset manufacturers, a good chunk of those that were announced were a “mini” version of an established Smartphone. From our vantage point, we did not see that there was a surging demand for smaller smart phones, but someone must associate “mini” with “cheaper” with “higher volumes” and “mainstream”. moment will tell, but the fact is that a “mini” version with a much smaller screen often makes the experience less compelling. Soon, we will see whether that was just a marketing gimmick, or whether users are really OK with putting with a lesser experience to save some bucks. That said, whether the notes plans don’t get cheaper, there’s little point to save $100 on a lesser smart phone only to pay close to $2000 by two years on the plan. Sony Ericsson drops hints of PSP phone

Rumors of a PSP phone have come and gone, and things don't look like changing anytime soon with buzz of such a device becoming reality revealed ath the Mobile World Congress Show Daily by a Sony Ericsson executive, claiming that "In the past there was no tie-up within us (Sony and Sony Ericsson), the PSP platform and Sony, but you can expect to form out much more about that." Well, with that in mind, do you think a PSP phone will be able to do much better than the iPhone in terms of mobile gaming?
