Word on the street is that Intel is gearing up for a significant update to its ultra-low voltage mobile chips, with a 1.46GHz Core i7 (68UM) lined up to be released in the fall. The ship is said to have the same 18W thermal peak potential, but could reach up to 2.53GHz when running in Turbo Boost mode. As with other Core i7 processors, that chip will additionally offer Hyperthreading, performing like a four-core chip with optimized programs. Pricing wasn’t mentioned, but hopefully it won’t break the bank.

Blackberry has released the official info about the upcoming Blackberry Bold 9650. To produce a lengthy story short, and just like the earlier leaks predicted, the phone is a CDMA worldphone version of the Bold 9700 (GSM-only) but has a SIM card slot that travelers can use abroad. Verizon and Sprint are rumored to be preparing the phone’s launch, and some Sprint marketing material has been allegedly spotted already. Although the iPhone is not available for with these carriers, Blackberry has been pitching the devices against the iPhone by pushing its multitasking capabilities: “You can use all of your favorite apps at the same moment – there’s no need to close one to use another” – pretty explicit, right? And Blackberry might be playing that angle considering the Bold 9630 is the first BB to have 512MB of application memory. The word on the street says that it might be eligible for a Webkit browser and an OS 6 update when both are ready – that’s a rumor. And whether you feared that it might lack WIFI, be assured that WIFI is present (it seems like a “duh”, but the Tour 9630 did not have it…). Other than that, head to our review of the Blackberry 9700 – the experience should be (almost) the same.

Word on the street has it that Asus is currently working on a new tablet which will see an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor in action underneath the chassis, apart from Windows 7 as the operating system of choice. Apparently, it could be unveiled within the next couple of weeks, and whether it is the same device that we talked about a couple of days earlier, thereupon the Q3 release instance mentioned would have been way off the charts. Apparently, that tablet will resemble the WePad (as seen above) closely, but stay tuned as we uncover more data on it.

Word on the street has it that Samsung will be releasing a Symbian-powered phone later that year, although we don’t have word on whether that will replace the relatively successful Omnia HD – which incidentally is the last Symbian device launched by Samsung. Do you think that rumor holds any water as Samsung moves to adopt a multi-OS strategy? After all, they already have smartphones running on Android, Windows Mobile, LiMo, Symbian and bada platforms.

AMD Executive “seen on their way to a meeting” with Apple’s top executives has sparked a new rumor about Apple possibly using AMD chips (gpu, cpu – or both). First, some context: ever since Apple has decided to switch from the PowerPC processors to the X86 architecture, it has chosen to source its processors (CPUS) from Intel, the original creator of X86. AMD has always been an available option, but so far, Apple has not used AMD’s CPUs.

The word on the street is that it *might* change soon considering AMD is now capable of delivering a processor+graphics combo that could be cheaper, while still maintaining good performance. That would allow Apple to increase its margins and put some competitive pressure on Intel who reins supreme since the introduction of its Core architecture years ago.

We’re heading to a Microsoft Event today, and we’re not 100% sure about what to expect. The word on the street is that Microsoft will announce new phones, codenamed Pure and Turtle, for the Verizon network. The new phones are aimed at social media users, and won’t be running Windows Phone 7, which is coming out only in the Fall. Instead, that might be something that shows the fruits of the Microsoft acquisition of Danger Inc, the maker of the Sidekick. The event starts at 10am PT, but keep an eye on live.ubergizmo.com a little before that, as we will post some images there as we get them.

In yet another sign that the tablet fever is that an all-time high, rumors of a Blackberry tablet have surfaced in the Taiwanese component supply chain. Multiple sources have reportedly received orders related to a 8.9″ Blackberry Tablet. Hon Hai, a contract manufacturer that builds the iPad for Apple, is said to be one of the company that got the contract. Of course, at the moment, that is unconfirmed and highly speculative.

The word on the street is that the Blackberry tablet would have a WiFi and 3G capability (remember that a Blackberry is pretty much useless with WiFi only). additionally the composition would be subsidized by Advertising. “The [unit] volume is not very high”, according to the source. Doesn’t that contradict the advertising bit? How can you create an advertising platform with a low volume of devices/ad views? Take the whole thing with a grain of salt. Spotted on Crackberry.

Word on the street is that LG is planning to launch its LG GU290 cell phone, and according to a leaked picture of said phone, it’s likely going to be destined to AT&T, since AT&T’s logo can be clearly seen on the phone. Technical specifications of the GU290 currently aren’t available yet, but considering that it’s in a similar line with the existing GU230 and GU280 phones, it’s probably going to be a budget phone, one that AT&T hopefully won’t be asking too much for.
