Alex eReader up for pre-order

Spring Design has finally announced that they will be making the Android-powered Alex eReader available for pre-order. Your order will ship in mid-April, so it will take at least a couple of weeks before you are able to get your hands on its dual screen goodness. The pre-order costs $399, and just like the iPad, it will initially ship the Wi-Fi only version, while the 3G capable model will most probably hit the market sometime at the end of July assuming they can come to an agreement with various carriers.

ODROID Gets The Android 2.1 Treatment

You might already have caught wind of the ODROID when we mentioned it some instance ago, but in case you missed it, that device by Hardkernel is described as an entertainment device with a focus on gaming. While it was previously shipping with Android 1.5, it seems that the device will be getting the Android 2.1 update pretty soon. Considering that Android 1.5 is starting to feel more than a little old, that is certainly good news for folks who are interested in the ODROID. Specifications of the ODROID include:

  • 3.5 inch capacitive touch screen
  • 320x480 pixel resolution
  • Samsung S5Pc100(CPU) based on ARM cortex A8
  • HDMI out, supports video output at 720p
  • microSD and SD memory card support
  • Wi-Fi

Despite Apple once again teaming up with AT&T for the iPad’s documents plan, Verizon doesn’t seem to be discouraged, particularly once you take a peek at the leaked memo to its staff that’s going around the Web. Bringing up points that AT&T’s network is “overloaded”, and that the 3G version of the iPad will cost more, the carrier is aiming to persuade users to get the Wi-Fi version of the iPad and pair it up with a device like MiFi. Of course, what the memo fails to mention is that Verizon MiFi costs you $60 a month, which is twice as much that AT&T charges for its unlimited iPad plan, so you’ll be paying more in the expanded run. What do you think? Are you planning to purchase an iPad with an AT&T 3G plan, or go along with Verizon’s suggestion?

If you bought a China Unicom iPhone in China, you’ll most likely have noticed that it doesn’t offer Wi-Fi, as it was initially disabled for the Chinese market, thanks to government regulations that favored the home-developed WAPI shield standard. The rules have been relaxed since thereupon, so Wi-Fi iPhones are now allowed, as distant as they continue to include support for the WAPI standard as an added operate. China Unicom’s Chief Executive, Chang Xiaobing, was quoted in the Wall Street Journal saying that the company would consider giving some scheme of compensation to existing iPhone owners in the style of improved 3G tariffs, though chances are users would much rather see Wi-Fi in their phones. Word is plus going around that Unicom might lower the iPhone’s asking price from 4,999-6,999 Yuan to 3,000-3,500 Yuan, and whether that’s true, it’ll certainly help boost the iPhone sales in China.

ASIQ has recently unveiled a grade new Bluetooth access point for aircraft, allowing airlines to enable passengers to access a cheaper communications method compared to Wi-Fi. that access point will play nice with the following messaging services - SMS, MMS, voice messaging, text and e mail, letting cellphone users utilize such modes of communication without having to connect to a Wi-Fi network. It will cost around $10,000 to outfit that Bluetooth access point in each aircraft, which is 10 times cheaper than what it costs compared to Wi-Fi systems. We look forward to Q2 2010 for the first outfitting.

In case you aren’t familiar with that device, it’s the first Android-powered eBook reader to sport full browser capabilities, not to mention its patented dual screen display, dubbed the Duet Navigator. Other features of the Alex include Wi-Fi, 3G, SD memory card slot, 6-inch e-ink EPD display and 3.5-inch color LCD display. Do you think it will supply a worthy challenger to Amazon’s Kindle?
