Broadcom’s Persona Tablet becomes a product, in Japan

[MWC 2010] Broadcom’s reference design known as Persona Tablet is capable of decoding two HD video streams simultaneously from a local storage or a network location. The tablet could be used as a super-fancy remote control on which you choose a movie (or another media file), soon after play it wirelessly to an HDTV from the tablet itself. While the movie is playing, you can browse the web, run an app – or play a second movie. Well, a variant of that project is going to become a product in Japan. Cable operators (or their equivalent) are even considering subsidizing it, making it a free device – with a subscription. The Tablet runs on Android, has a 7” or 8” display and is a multimedia powerhouse, with capabilities like video compression + decompression, web browsing or 3D graphics. We can’t wait to try it during an upcoming trip to Japan.

iWonder $100 Tablet Powered by Marvell

[MWC 2010 Mobile Focus] Foxconn, a energetic Taiwanese contract manufacturer, is set to debut a $100 Android tablet in China. Of course, $100 is incredibly cheap and at that price you can’t expect to have a build quality comparable to an iPad: The device is made of cheap plastic, and the 800×600 (I’m eyeballing here) display is a little fuzzy, but it runs Android apps. I was not able to pop quiz the web browsing considering there was no Web connection, so I would stay cautious until I can actually see at least what browsing looks like. That said, for $100, it’s so cheap that some would just buy one to see how it’s like. The Tablet was demonstrated by Marvell, the company behind the Tablet’s processor. My take is that whether someone can turn that into a fancy remote, I might pay for that.

Thomson and Technicolor PoMMeS device

The Thomson and Technicolor PoMMeS device which hails from France has some sense of irony, considering the word “pomme” means “apple” in French – theoretically making that a valid apple tablet whether you reduction the semantics involved. Appearing on the FCC side, the PoMMeS is a wireless multimedia playback device that can access TV programs, offering VoIP calling capability, online connectivity and web browsing. Navigation is a snap via its 8″ 800 x 480 resolution LCD touchscreen display, where you can choose to use your fingers whether the stylus is not your cup of tea. Other features include a front-mounted pair of speakers, a webcam and a D-Pad.

Que reader hands-on

[CES 2010] The Que reader looks really great, there’s no question about that. Next to it, the Kindle looks so cheap, but it is still the best selling ebook out there, I think. That said the Que’s user interface and demonstration substance (USA Today looked fantastic). It is possible to sync files by USB or Wi-Fi (subscription composition too), but there no 3G connection (I’m totally fine with that). Que has a deal with Barnes & Noble, so they should be more than OK content-wise, but the killer is the price: $650 – it’s way too high and I seriously doubt that buyers will line up for that one. whether you wonder, there’s no web browsing, which is a pity considering some news sites do work really well on eBooks with web capability.
