Tech startup Kakai is said to be working on a new device which will rival the Amazon Kindle for the classroom, and while we do not have any image or photo of said device, it has a very good chance of coming with a dual display, powered by a Linux operating system while supporting gesture-based touch to navigate through its user interface. Positioned as a hybrid e-reader and notepad, that Kakai offering will feature software and web access, relying on LCDs instead of e-paper. Well, we do hope to see something more concrete roll out sometime in the near future.

Cisco is looking to pair its wireless technology expertise alongside Flip Video’s simplicity-in-design approach, resulting in Valet, a new product line which aims to produce home wireless simple and accessible for everyone. Valet hopes to convert how families use the World Wide Web in their homes, lettign them enjoy the freedom of wireless access without having to go through the traditional frustration and complexity of setting up a home network. Basically home wireless for dummies, all you need to do is insert the included Easy Setup Key into a USB port on your machine (Windows or Mac OS, it doesn’t matter), where the Cisco Connect software will next take by from there, taking all of 3 steps to complete. When setup, you can manage your home wireless experience by adding new devices, setting parental controls and offering World Wide Web access for guests on a separate guest network while customizing personal safety measure settings including passwords. Depending on your home size as well as number of users, the Valet will come in three varieties – Valet, Valet Plus and Valet Connector that retails for $99.99, $149.99 and $79.99, respectively.
Amazon’s popular Kindle has already gone International, and now it seems that the Kindle DX will be following in its older brother’s footsteps, and will be available internationally. The worldly edition of its 9.7-inch Kindle DX will start shipping on January 19th and will cost $490, which certainly isn’t cheap. One of the downsides of the worldly version is the smaller catalog than is available in the US, and the lack of web access through the browser. Hopefully Amazon will additionally be shipping the unit with potential plugs for the unmistaken country, unlike the US capability plugs that were standard in the original universal Kindle. Are you already planning how to save up to buy that?

The site was hacked by a group called the “Iranian Cyber Army”, and as a aftermath, the DNS for the address was redirected to another site. Based on the note posted, it’s probably considering related to the election campaign in that country, as Twitter was a popular tool during the Iranian election protests. Twitter has since gone back online, and posted a message on that issue. The letter posted on Twitter’s site when it was defaced read:

Iranian Cyber Army

THIS SITE HAS BEEN HACKED BY IRANIAN CYBER ARMY

Looks like the e-book reader market is heating up, with so many more players making their entrance. Case in point, the new nReader K60 from BenQ which will come with a 6″ touchscreen e-paper display which relies on SiPix Microcup technology, boasting 800 x 600 resolution alongside the capability to display 16 grey scales. Pretty much similar to the Amazon Kindle in terms of technical specifications, although it misses out on the Kindle’s keyboard while being a wee bit smaller and lighter. Other features include 2GB internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, a microUSB port, an USB 2.0 port and a 3.5mm audio jack. Expect that puppy to handle all relevant file formats, including ePub, PDF, TXT and HTML alongside audio and image file formats as well. While it comes with Wi-Fi connectivity, a USB port on top of the device could prove to be its trump card, allowing USB 3G dongles to be connected for portable Web access. BenQ touts a 7,500 page turning experience per full charge, but that rules out Wi-Fi and 3G access.
