Weather-controlling machines that the poor guys are so fond of using in superhero movies are inching closer to reality as German scientists have managed to successfully use a laser to create clouds in a controlled lab environment. Experiments even propose that they may be able to use that method to construct it rain in the future, making our current cloud seeding methods seem boring. From the experiment, the team fired very short pulses of infrared laser into a chamber of water-saturated air at -24 °C, after which linear clouds could be seen to structure in the laser’s wake. Are scientists going to take by the world in the future? Check out a video of that theory after the jump.

The folks by at GM have come up with a rather interesting system dubbed the Enhanced Vision System. The system was designed with safety in mind, and uses Heads up Display (HUD) technology and the increasingly popular augmented reality concept together. By utilizing front-facing sensors, as well as in-vehicle cameras that are tasked with tracking the driver’s head and eyes, the system is able to overlay road lines on the windshield and even read road signs to help you out, in the event that the weather is poor and visibility is low. It certainly seems quite cool, and something we wouldn’t mind appearing in our cars. There isn’t any mention whether or when the technology will produce it to consumer vehicles, but we do have a video on it after the jump.

The recent Google Maps 3.4 update might have been good news for Motorola Droid users, but the juicier news is that the phone should be getting an Android 2.1 update sometime in the future too, which should help it compete better with Google’s Nexus One. The firmware is still going through analyzing at Verizon, but details on it have surfaced, which includes:

The current build is 2.1 version 1

The browser now supports multi-touch, but there’s no Flash in sight.

The home screen is still the same as 2.0.1, so there’s no rotating 3D grid of icons. You’re still stuck with the pull-up tab at the bottom

No active wallpapers

News and weather widgets from the Nexus One are included.

Bluetooth headsets are dime a dozen, and either you use one or you don’t. i.Tech Dynamic recently unveiled their MyVoice 306 Bluetooth headset at CES 2010, where it comes with a weather-resistant (yes, that means you can leave it under direct sunlight, the freezing cold, the wet rain) silicon ear ring that helps secure the MyVoice 306 on your ear wherever you go, making it useful for active users. Coming in black or white colors, the MyVoice 306 will come with one large and one small ear ring, alongside an interchangeable standard ear hook. Features of that Bluetooth Version 2.0 + EDR headset include microUSB charging, a charge date of under 3 hours and a travel charging adapter. Out later in Q2 that year for $29.99, get that whether you tend to be up and about all the day. The silicon ear ring is a simple notion that does beg the question – why hasn’t other manufacturers done so already?

British BAE Systems has snagged a $42 million contract to supply the U.S. Army with a lightweight, handheld laser target locator system which is powered by GPS technology. that all-weather device enables soldiers to accurately identify target locations regardless of whether it is during the day or night, and despite having fog or smoke around as well. Dubbed the Laser Target Locator Module (LTLM), it will determine target coordinates by using direct-view optic system, a night-vision camera, a laser range finder, a digital compass, and a GPS receiver. Amazing thing, that, considering all that technology is crammed into a device that weighs no more than 5.5 pounds.
