It was previously speculated that Apple’s iPad would be able to support USB audio and perhaps some other devices via the USB port granted by the iPad Camera Connection Kit. But now tests have shown that it can work with many USB headphones and microphones, allowing users to construct and receipt VoIP calls with a normal USB headset. USB keyboards additionally seem to work, but that is less of a surprise, given the fact that the iPad already supports Bluetooth keyboards. Are you planning to use the Camera Connection Kit for something like that, or are you planning to use it purely for your camera?

If you’re the type of person who likes to prepare prank calls, the “Truth in Caller ID Act of 2010” bill that was just passed won’t be something you’ll like. Under said bill, it will become illegal to use any caller ID service to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller ID info, with intent to defraud and deceive. And that change will affect any real day voice communications service, which includes VoIP. That being said, you’re still able to block your own outgoing caller ID data, and law enforcement isn’t affected as well. that is certainly good for safety functions, but folks will need to figure out another way to play pranks on folks.

While many public weren’t entirely certain what Google was planning to do with Gizmo5 when it acquired the VoIP company, word is going around that Google is currently doing some internal evaluating on a desktop version of Google Voice, which might produce the reasons behind the earlier acquisition clearer. whether Google does release a desktop version of Google Voice, which means that you’ll be able to build and receive calls from your computer on the same number that rings on all your other devices, it’ll probably be a good indication that Google is planning to get serious about the VoIP business. Will such a desktop program distress the likes of Skype, or will the king of VoIP not even bat an eyelid?

This is still unconfirmed at the moment, but word is going around that the recently mentioned Samsung tablet might be powered by Google’s Android OS instead of some edition of Microsoft’s Windows 7. To form the deal even juicier, apparently the device could feature calling via a headset, possibly with some implementation of VoIP, 3G and perhaps even 4G connectivity. Nothing is set in stone at the moment, so we’ll have to keep an eye on that. whether it were up to you, what specifications would you give the Samsung tablet?

The Thanko USB Mouse speaker is pretty different since how many mice you know sport a speaker? Virtually none, we suppose, although that speaker won’t bring the house down the next moment you throw a pajama party. Throw in a small external microphone and you will be able to chat with your buddies using your mouse by a VoIP program. Skype has finally given assurance that they are working on a new version of Skype for the iPhone that enables VoIP calls by a 3G connection. Needless to say, that upgrade requires accesing a feature in the new iPad SDK that recently lifted the restriction of VoiP calls on a Wi-Fi connection. Skype might be a little bit slower in rolling out their update simply considering they hope to “give you the very best audio quality we can.” There is plus confirmation that Skype is working for a similar app that will grace the iPad when the latter rolls out in less than 2 months’ duration.

With all the flak Apple has gotten by the last 48 hours regarding the ‘iPad’ name, who’d have thought anybody would want to fight by that name? Well, it seems that Fujitsu does, particularly since it launched its own iPad back in 2002. It was a handheld device for shop assistants, allowing them to check pricing, stock details, and construct sales wirelessly. Sold mainly in the US, it boasted a 3.5-inch color touchscreen, Intel processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and even VoIP support, powered by Windows CE. In case you were wondering, the iPad name is owned by various companies in different countries, including Siemens in Germany, and additionally a lingerie company called Coconut Grove Pads. possibly Apple will be able to come to a settlement like it did with Cisco back when it announced the iPhone.

You may or may not have noticed it, but it seems that beta version of the iPhone SDK 3.2 which was released in conjunction with the announced of Apple’s iPad has some hidden gems inside it. We’re talking about Apple allowing VoIP by 3G now for its apps, which is something that many of us have been demanding for a faraway day now. As can be seen from recent announcements from iCall, Fring and Acrobits, developers have already taken advantage of the new opportunity and updated their apps to work by a 3G connection. Running VoIP by 3G isn’t something new for many phones out there, but Apple has always had a restriction on it, so that is a welcome new ‘feature’ to the iPhone. With that in mind, it seems that there is a possibility of turning your iPad into a voice-chat device too, since you can run these iPhone apps. The teeny bit of poor news related to that is that you’ll still need to have a carrier that doesn’t mind you running VoIP by 3G, as some operators don’t allow VoIP by their 3G network, or charge you additional fees. AT&T did announce last October that it would allow VoIP by 3G, which seems to jive quite nicely with that latest development.
