Microsoft has already made some inroads with Silverlight (a technologie competing with Adobe Flash) in choose web media outlets, but at NAB, the company will try to sell Silverlight for set top boxes. The concept is to run Silverlight on low-power processors such as those found in your cable box to bring video composition with digital rights management (DRM) to your TV. You can guess that whether that works, it would create a great entry for Microsoft in the broadcasting world, and down the road, you can expect to get the same services on other Silverlight-compatible platform: mobile, PC and Mac. considering set top boxes are self-contained, users don’t really know (and care) about what technology powers them, so it might be easier to get a win there. Now the question is: will broadcaster be convinced? What do you think?
SnapStream is talking about its new DVR appliance that can record up to 50 channels simultaneously onto 100TB worth of storage capacity. SnapStream is plus writing the software to control that monster (they used to be my favorite Media Center system considering they could record in DivX). that is equivalent to 326 Tivo Premier boxes, and it’s a closet-size box. In the back, a individual coax cable is the input for all that video composition. Arguably, the more interesting part is that SnapStream has tools to search the substance. Their system is used by TV show production teams that need to find recent footage quickly. The Daily Show uses their tech, apparently. Ironically, it’s more channels than are available in most countries. Specs in the full posts.

The VIA ART-3000 is a total solution when it comes to fanless box computers, since that ruggedized machine is based on the different I/O-rich Em-ITX structure factor which is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. You can choose to have it as a complete system that comprises of a collection of drives and memory whether you wish. that fanless design will additionally come with a range of special features such as diskless booting, excellent vibration and shock resistance, dual Gigabit networking and dual LVDS video support. Underneath the hood, you will find a 1.3GHz VIA Nano processor and the VIA VX800 media system processor. Capable of supporting up to a trio of displays and a couple of independent video composition streams, you will be surprised by that little dynamite of a machine. No notion on pricing though.

[CES 2010] Wi2Wi announced their latest Mobile Embedded Hotspot technology that introduces the capabilty of turning any business and consumer electronic device armed with an World Wide Web connection into an impromptu, pocket-sized wireless hotspot which can support up to 8 users simultaneously. that would translate the slew of MIDs, smartphones, digital cameras, portable media players and GPS navigation systems to double up as Wi-Fi access points, relying on fixed broadband or 3G connectivity to hook up to the World Wide Web. that is made possible by transforming such portable devices into micro Wi-Fi Access Points, paving the way for robust real-time streaming of audio/video composition via Wi-Fi. Great to know it is additionally backwards compatible with earlier generation of Wi-Fi enabled products. Currently, MEH technology can be found in three of their products – the W2SW0001, W2CBW003 and W2CBWG01.

VESA has recently updated the Embedded DisplayPort Standard to Version 1.1a while drawing up requirements for the Video Interface to the LCD Panel in notebooks as well as various embedded applications.

eDP version 1.1a includes further definition on display authentication for protected video composition, addresses Sink device AUX channel interrupt requests, and makes enhancements to the 4-lane connector used for 3D display applications. eDP is based on the VESA DisplayPort 1.1a Standard. The DisplayPort Standard is oriented toward external applications with emphasis on interoperability amidst system vendors and interconnection cables. Newer PC chipsets and GPUs designed for notebook PCs support both DisplayPort and eDP from the same video port connections, enabling configuration options to the system integrator.
