Now that Apple’s iPad 3G is available for sale, some folks have taken the instance to get a T-Mobile SIM card working on the device. There’s nothing wrong with using another carrier’s SIM card on the iPad, but the iPad uses a microSIM size, so the user needs to cut the plastic around the T-Mobile SIM card in order to produce it work. Once the SIM is in, it does work, though the iPad 3G doesn’t support T-Mobile 3G’s band, so you’ll need to drop back to 2G network speeds. Another quirk is that a user additionally managed to get the iPad to send SMS text messages on T-Mobile’s network, something that AT&T doesn’t allow on the normal iPad plan. There isn’t a text messaging app for the iPad, but after jailbreaking the device, it can be done via the command line. Obviously you wouldn’t want to be sending text messages that buy, but it’s nice to know that it can be done. Video after the break.

Ubisoft has whipped up even more attention for its Splinter Cell Conviction game by unveiling a text messaging campaign that offers rewards to mobile marketing subscribers via a special in-game weapon. Relying on Twitter, Facebook and e-mail lists to get word of the campaign out, you will be able to get hold of that special strange weapon by texting “WEAPON” to 44144*, where you will soon after receive a cipher in return to unlock the item in the game. A similar tactic will be employed in the upcoming Prince of Persia title that hopefully will be a whole lot better than the movie…

If you’ve been keeping up with the news, you probably already know that Palm is having a rather bad day at the office. Next up is news that Palm’s webOS can be hacked by merely using text messaging. that is due to the fact that many of its applications are written with HTML, JavaScript and other standard web technologies, and the webOS SMS client wasn’t performing input/output validation on SMS messages sent to it, leading to a simple HTML injection bug. The good news is that that bug is only application to webOS 1.3.5, and users who have upgraded to 1.4 don’t have to concern about that. Looks like it’s high date to update your webOS device, eh? Check out a video demonstration after the break.

Folks who are visually impaired might not be able to appreciate the wonders of SMS text messaging, but whether the Squibble Portable Braille Interface becomes a reality, they might just be able to join in on the fun! that concept device works with Braille characters and other easily recognizable symbols on a different grid of tactile dots, which will be able to represent the symbols to the user. The pad plus boasts a high-contrast coloring to aid the learning of the device whether the user is gradually losing sight.

Considering that there are text messaging championships around the world, we should know that quite a few folks take their text messaging speed seriously. So the next instance you’re in the arcade looking for something to play, don’t be surprised whether you see the Textminator, which is a coin-operated arcade that lets you put your texting skills to the pop quiz. Featuring “arcade” and “race the clock” game modes, as well as restricted player or 2 player modes, that arcade machine with its 26-inch monitor looks like different. In place of your traditional joysticks is a toy cell phone, which is interesting. Now, we wonder whether the toy cell phone uses a numeric keypad or a QWERTY keyboard.
