Liquavista pursues full color e-ink displays
February 20, 2010
Liquavista is not a name that many of us are familiar with, but the company is coming up with full color, e-ink screens which are supposedly easy on the eyes, with its prototype being more than ready to be demonstrated whether you're interested. that is the outcome of a collaboration with Texas Instruments, and they hope to release an e-reader sometime down the road. Could that be the perfect e-reader display which toes the line amidst the Kindle and the iPad? Only moment will tell. Texas Instruments will be doing their part by providing support for its OMAP platform so that e-readers running on Liquavista displays will be a snap to roll out, with word that developer kits are on their way out as well. Excited yet?

Texas Instruments with 3D display for cellphones
February 18, 2010

Texas Instruments has unveiled a sort new 3D display for cellphones that runs off an OMAP3 chipset. The display comprises of a 120Hz LCD alongside a 3M film which is capable of directing images to the left or right eye in an alternating manner, doing away with the need for glasses although we're not certain whether extended use of such a display will cause unnecessary strain on one's eyes. Apparently, Texas Instruments plus has OMAP4 chips in the works that will enable high definition 3D movies (dual 720p) while outputting them through an HDMI port. Can't wait for such technology to become mainstream.

Texas Instruments nHD chipset announced
February 17, 2010

[MWC 2010] Texas Instruments has just announced its latest nHD chipset alongside the DLP Pico suite, where the former makes it possible to manufacture the thinnest, smallest DLP Pico engine to period. With nHD production availability expected to start from Q2 of that year onwards, one can expect to see a new range of pico projectors hit the market before the year is by. As seen in the image above, the nHD chip is as small as a grain of rice, and despite its size, is full well capable of offering stunning picture quality. Features of the new DLP Pico solution includes :-
- nHD (640x360) resolution
- Enables leading contrast ratio of better than 1,000:1 for the blackest blacks and most accurate whites
- Enables true RGB LED wide color gamut for rich saturated colors
- Improved ability efficiency and electronic footprint
- Incorporates a new low potential Pico DPP2601/2607 ASIC/Processor
- Enables a greater than 20 percent thinner optical module than WVGA chipset with full offset
- Enables a greater than 50 percent smaller optical module volume than WVGA chipset with full offset

Texas Instruments TI 4600 Series Concept
February 16, 2010
[MWC 2010] Texas Instruments (TI) was demonstrating that funny-looking device. Obviously, that is not a “huge phone” concept, but rather a dual-display concept. One display shows some substance (TV, movie, music…) while the other display is used to supply controls or additional knowledge. The primary output can additionally be routed to a big TV via HDMI. TI doesn’t know what its customers will do with it but they believe that that functionality will sell. Note that companies like Marvell plus have multi-display features (up to 5, I heard), so there’s a bit of a trend formation here.

Texas Instruments WiLink 7 chip is super capable
February 10, 2010

Texas Instruments' WiLink 7 chip is extremely capable as it touts to be the first chip of its kind to include a quartet of wireless capabilities, all on a restricted chip. When we say wireless, we mean Bluetooth connectivity, an FM transceiver, GPS support and 802.11n Wi-Fi. With the merging of all four onto a one design chip, phone designers will be able to play around with the physical size as well as energy requirements. According to Texas Instruments, thie WiLink 7 chip requires just half the space as that of a standard multi-chip approach, consuming 30% less requirements as well. We would like to see just which phone manufacturer takes up the WiLink 7 in their designs first. [Press Release]

Texas Instruments OMAP4 Chipset Can Drive 3 Independent Displays
February 3, 2010

The Nexus One and Motorola Droid all have nice displays, but things could get better, right? Texas Instruments (TI) has come up with a nice demo unit (picture courtesy of Slash Gear) that is powered by Android, and the best part is that it sports 2 screens, as well as HDMI-out. whether that wasn’t suitable, it additionally has a 12-megapixel camera, and a pico projector. It’s certainly not a device that will be making it to the market anytime soon, as it’s more for show, but it’s certainly something that makes you drool. With all the video grunt under it, possibly we’ll be seeing phones with multiple displays in the near future?

Rumor: Windows Mobile 7 Delayed till 2011?
January 12, 2010

This is still firmly in the “rumor” bin. Sources have indicated that reps from Microsoft, HTC, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Lenovo, Texas Instruments, and even Nokia have said that Windows Mobile 7’s release has been postponed to 2011. It’s weird to see “Nokia” in the list, but perhaps it’s due to it being a rumor. Apparently due to that delay, some “committed Windows Mobile 7” phones and smartbooks are being shifted to Google’s Android OS. Do you think that Windows Mobile 7 will be pushed to 2011, or do you think that it’s still on track for a 2010 release?
