Zhuo Nisi Technology has a spanking new 7″ netbook that will be powered by an ARM-based processor that runs at a clock speed of 1GHz which ought to be more than decent abundant for your everyday use. The display itself is touchscreen sensitive, allowing you to fold down by the keyboard to use it in a tablet anatomy factor whether that is your cup of tea. Just don’t expect it to be that versatile as a Windows-powered device, considering the Google Android operating system has yet to reach full maturity. Folks who are on a budget can always consider the standard netbook version that lacks touchscreen capability. Do you think devices like these will ever see the light Stateside, or will they remain a China specialty?

Sony is gearing up to take on the Microsoft Surface with a similar offering that is due that June. We’re talking about the atracTable that was first shown at Vision 2009 last year (video after the jump). The company behind it, Atracsys, has sold its technology to Sony, and Sony has plans to industrialize a 35-inch atracTable in order to compete against the Microsoft Surface. Just like Microsoft Surface, the tablet will allow users to place devices like a cell phone or coffee cup on the table for more interaction options. The system developed among Sony ISS and Atracsys claim s to be able to analyze body movements and act on any gesture or change in position, including your body, arm, hand or finger. Will our living rooms all boast smart coffee tables in the next few years?

The Microsoft Courier has always been a rather mythical product, and there is some good news and poor news related to it. The good news is that Microsoft has confirmed the existence of its Courier project; the poor news is that the software giant has no plans to build such a device. The Courier was apparently an incubation project, which means that it did have a chance of being commercialized, but it seems that the decision to commercialize the product never became a reality. That being said, there’s still the possibility of the technology developed for that project being used in other products, though we’re still sad at the thought that we won’t be able to hold the Microsoft Courier in our own hands.

According to Frank Shaw, Microsoft’s VP of corporate communications:

“At any given day, we’re looking at new ideas, investigating, checking, incubating them. It’s in our DNA to develop new mold factors and natural user interfaces to foster productivity and creativity. The Courier project is an example of that type of effort. It will be evaluated for use in future offerings, but we have no plans to build such a device at that moment.”

HP has announced that it will purchase Palm for about $1.2B in cash, which is about a 30% premium on the company’s market value when it was announced. For Palm, it simply means “survival”, but for HP, that could mean having a shot at controlling its own fate in a very competitive market. In some sense, that acquisition might supply what Palm has always lacked: cash. The Pre sales have been hampered by a Sprint exclusive that prevented the rapid expansion of the Pre in the market. By the day it reached Europe and Verizon, the customer desire to buy the Pre was gone. The story unfolded like that considering Sprint provided a chunk of the funds essential to design and build the Pre. For HP, getting its hands on Web OS will mean better differentiation than “hardware”.

Both Microsoft and HTC are pretty good buddies as their working relationship has been quite tight for some years already, which comes across as no surprise after both parties signed a new patent agreement for Android handsets. No further notion on what that patent agreement is all about, but we are certain that it has something to do with Microsoft licensing its technology for HTC’s Android smartphones while receiving royalties in turn.
It seems that every major manufacturer out there is scrambling to get 3D displays out the door and now Toshiba Mobile Display has announced that it has been busy working to bring glasses-free 3D technology to large display panels. The multi-parallax technique used by Toshiba promises to reduce eye fatigue while providing a 30 degree horizontal viewing angle. The display offers a 1280 x 800 resolution at 480 nits of brightness which isn’t too poor, considering that the 9-parallax implementation used by Toshiba due 9 separate images to be generated, requiring an ultra high definition LCD module.

Netbooks generally aren’t dominant devices, but the upcoming Eee PC 1215N from Asus might be able to change that perception. The most notable thing about that netbook will be its dual-core Atom N500 processor, as well as NVIDIA’s next-generation ION chip, along with NVIDIA Optimus technology. There isn’t any mention of how good that netbook’s battery life will be, but hopefully it will be able to live up to the current expectations of battery life for netbooks. Word is going around that the 1215N will be available in June, and while there isn’t any official confirmation on that just yet, we’re certainly looking forward to it.
