Panasonic ToughBook C1 Convertible Tablet PC Video

March 3, 2010

Editor's note; that is an updateof the write-up published yesterday, we added the video

2010 is touted to be the year of the tablet , thanks to the iPad launch; but, the latest Apple luxury toy has nothing in common with the new Panasonic ToughBook C1, the "world's lightest 12,1" convertible tablet PC"*, which will supply good computing performances far away from your sofa, in poor weather conditions and fit environments. Panasonic launched the ToughBook H1 Field tablet at MWC, and the C1 is introduced for the HIMSS conference (Healthcare info and Management Systems Society) since the ToughBook C1 is mostly targeted to the healthcare market.

According to Panasonic, the company has been building rugged PCs since 1993 with integrated wireless since 1996, and they experiment the wireless connectivity in one of the world's largest anechoic chambers, to ensure the best possible quality. The ToughBook is a surprisingly very light and bulky business rugged tablet built in a magnesium alloy case for durability, and is equipped with a strap and a dome for comfortable hand support (see video and pictures).

Openmoko WikiReader gets software update

Openmoko WikiReader gets software update

The Openmoko WikiReader will be able to receive its Spring 2010 software update now which offers math equations that are rendered as crisp bitmap images, alongside updates to its database of more tha 3 million Wikipedia articles. Apart from that, the on-screen keyboard has been refreshed to resemble key presses similar to that on the iPhone (we wished they wouldn't have copied it that blatantly though), while readers will certainly appreciate fluid scrolling and the indispensable back button. Of course, would you rather access Wikipedia from your computer at home or a tablet PC instead of forking out $29 for a year's subscription service to Wikipedia alongside two pre-loaded microSD memory cards?

Netbook Navigator Nav9 tablet PC

Netbook Navigator Nav9 tablet PC

There is a new tablet PC in town from Netbook Navigator, where it is known as the Nav9 with a starting price of $799 a pop. While that amount of dough can let you pick up a couple of decent netbooks, you won't be able to tote around a tablet while looking cool, can you? Features of the Nav9 include an 8.9" multitouch display at 1,024 x 600 resolution, an Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor, integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics, 2GB of RAM and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and optional 3G HSDPA or CDMA connectivity. Storage-wise, you get a 16GB SSD within, although we would prefer to have more substantial space, never mind whether it is a hard drive. The 3-cell 1700mAh seems to be a disappointment though with a mere 2.5 hour battery life. whether you happen to have a really deep bank explanation, thereupon you can always top up the $799 starting price to pick up a 32GB, 64GB or 128GB SSD.

HP to develop devices with built-in projector

HP to develop devices with built-in projector

Granted, pico projectors haven't really taken off just yet nor anytime in the near future, but that doesn't mean hardware manufacturers won't try to incorporate it in their future devices. Take HP for instance - they are working on a tablet PC and notebook that will feature an integrated pico-projector inside each of them. There is no proper prototypes shown off (or leaked) for the tablet just yet, but it could have its roots in the HP Touchsmart tablet PCs from all those years ago. As for the notebook, the projector will be placed on top of its display just like where most webcams are situated. It does assemble us wonder where the webcam will thereupon be placed - perhaps on a swiveling, pivoted segment right beside the projector?
