With everybody trying to go green nowadays, there is a demand for solar technology, and now the researchers at MIT have come up with some interesting tech that allows them to create solar cells thin adequate to be stuck on sheets of paper. To invent things even better, the process involves coating the piece of paper with organic semiconductor material using a process similar to that of an inkjet printer. The downside is that the cells are currently just under 2% efficient at converting sunlight into energy, compared to the commercial panels out there that can be by 20% efficient. But whether development goes well, we’re really looking forward to having solar cells on nearly anything that sees the sun. It’ll take instance of course, and the director of the project has said that it usually takes about 10 years from the duration of invention to commercializing it, so we’ll need to be patient (or invent a moment machine).

Solar technology and spaceships are always cool subjects to talk about, and now the folks by in Japan are planning to launch a spacecraft powered by solar sails into deep space. The vessel has been dubbed Ikaros (Interplanetary Kite-craft Accelerated by Radiation of the Sun). The creators of that vessel dub it a “space yacht” since it has 46-foot sails that are thinner than any human hair. Aside from its solar sails, the Ikaros additionally sports thin solar cells to further help it generate electricity. that spacecraft is reported to cost about $16 million, so it doesn’t look like we’ll be owning one of these anytime soon, but we can certainly dream.

If you’re looking for a speaker that can keep you company while on your camping trips you could consider the Eton Soulra (if you’re willing to accept its bulk). It sports an 8-watt speaker can whether capable of blaring your music for up to 7 hours on a full charge. The fact that it has a sturdy and water-resistant exterior will construct it a good companion for the outdoors. More importantly is that it can draw its juice from the sun, so you don’t have to anguish too much about battery potential. It’ll currently going for $199, which might be a tad costly for a speaker, but hey, it’s solar powered!

We know that electric vehicles (EVs) are the way forward as the automotive industry wants to wean folks off gas, but that is still a expanded way in coming before EVs become mainstream and affordable decent for the average Joe on the street. Geely recently unveiled its Gleagle IG that comes with a solar panel on its front bonnet, presumably to help juice up its batteries by some bit whenever you are parked under the sun (or stuck in rush hour traffic, for that matter). Surely the solar panel won’t be able to charge its internal battery fully unless you leave it out for weeks on end (great for towering term parking in an open air carpark), but at least it does help a wee bit each day.

The Coachella music festival will feature a new solar-powered crane at its entrance that boasts LEDs which are powered by our sun. Thanks to LA-based Crimson Collective, the sculpture is known as Ascension and was inspired by the Japanese tradition of folding a thousand cranes in order to receive a wish. Nice to see event organizers rely more and more on solar capability for their energy needs in order to promote a green letter.

It looks like your iPad might not like the sun, and that’s not even taking into explanation the display being harder to read in direct sunlight. It seems that quite a few users are reporting that their iPads are giving a warning stating “iPad needs to cool down before you can use it”. According to Apple, the operational temperature of the iPad is 32° to 95° F when on, and the nonoperational temperature is -4° to 113° F. The issue is that the user received that warning outside NYC, where hasn’t been much hotter than 70° or so. Is the iPad overly sensitive to heat, or is it having trouble dissipating the heat generated by its internal components? Either way, whether you get that error, you can be certain that you’re not going to be in too good a mood.

Solar technology is not that advanced just yet to be able to capability everything, considering the percentage of efficiency of the solar cells are still in their teens. Well, the Sundolier sunlight transport system could be the future whether the efficiency level increases, since it is touted to supply suitable light to illuminate a 1,000 to 2,500 sq. ft. area without any other sources apart from the capability of the sun. that is made possible thanks to an active two-axis tracking mount with a couple of reflectors, making the entire setup look like one giant banana peel. All concentrated light is soon after reflected down a two foot tube, where it will be distributed via a “sun chandelier”. Sounds pretty nifty, no? After all, natural lighting is always better than artificial ones, and whether you get to save some more money while you are at it, why not?

There is nothing quite like renewable energy to keep the world moving, and the Solar Pebble, being the brainchild of Adam Robinson, is a concept that should be well received in poorer, underdeveloped countries. After all, that is a solar-powered lamp that is meant for use in rural Africa, where its LED will be powered by batteries which in turn are juiced up from the sun through a tiny yet efficient solar panel. Apart from providing some ambient lighting, it additionally doubles up as a device charger as distant as the tip is compatible. Granted, that looks more like a portable solar charger than anything else with the added advantage of a lamp, but otherwise it doesn’t resemble a pebble at all. Well, guess they had to shout it something, right?
