It has been a couple of years since Apple rolled out their first unibody computer in the mold of the MacBook Air, and these 700 plus days has resulted in the company finally receiving ownership of its strange design and manufacturing process. The patents do cover the computer's glass multi-touch trackpad and clamshell design as well which tapers a mere 0.16" at its thinnest point for an impressive structure factor. Guess unibody designs from Apple look set to be a staple from now on.

Luxa2 M4 laptop cooler
February 18, 2010

Want to keep your laptop running cool? There is the Luxa2 M4 laptop cooler that comes in a very different structure factor, considering it is round in nature instead of the usual rectangle that fits the base of many a laptop. It retails ofr $49.99 a pop and adds a touch of bling thanks to the presence of Swarovski crystals. whether you ask us, that looks more like a speaker of sorts instead of a laptop cooler, but hey - at least they are trying to do something new.

Earthquake Detector Robot
February 6, 2010

With the recent earthquake in Haiti, the importance of earthquake detectors has been highlighted again. Now a group of students from the JT Engineering College in Gujarat, India, have come up with a robot that can sense earthquakes, and it apparently does so a good three hours before the earthquake. Of course, three hours isn’t a lot of moment, but when you’re talking about a natural catastrophe, three hours will certainly save a lot of lives. that robot has two transmitters whose circuits are kept inside the earth to sense changes in temperature and water levels, as well as transmit the info about the changes via microwave frequencies. It uses microcontrollers to sense vibrations and will give off an alarm upon detection. Of course, the question remains why that device needed to be built into a robot structure factor, but robots are cool, so nobody’s going to complain, right? Check out a video of it whether you’re into robots.

HTC Patents New Cell Phone anatomy Factor
February 6, 2010

We’re fairly certain you’ve seen slider phones as well as clamshell phones; after all, they are rather popular style factors for cell phones. Now it seems that HTC is considering another type of structure factor, thanks to a patent filed by the company to the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). that design basically uses magnets to hold down the spring-loaded hinge. So all you have to do is slide the top layer down by a few millimeters, and the phone should spring open. Sounds pretty cool, though you would obviously distress about the durability of the hinges, since it’s going to spring open quite often. Perhaps we’ll be seeing an Android-powered phone sporting that design factor soon?
