Solid-state drives are becoming more and more popular nowadays, and Intel apparently has some big plans for SSDs that holiday season. Come the fourth quarter Intel is planning to introduce drives that offer capacities larger than what is currently offered. The chip giant is busy working on the more efficient 25nm MLC NAND flash memory, which can offer capacities such as 160GB, 300GB and 600GB, which should more or less replace the company’s existing 34nm X25-M range. Intel should also be coming up with a high capacity 1.8-inch version that is capable of hitting the 300GB mark as well. Are you looking forward to the day where laptop hard drives will be completely replaced by SSDs?

Super Talent has recently announced its latest value-for-money solid state drive (SSD) known as the Super Talent VSSD, where proud new owners of that device will be able to experience a shorter operating system bootup duration, speedier faster application loading and less capability consumption. The VSSD will play nice with a 3Gbps SATA-II bandwidth, and is capable of touching sequential read speeds up to 150 MB/sec and sequential write speeds up to 100 MB/sec. You will be able to choose from various capacities to suit your budget, where the 8GB model is going for $65 thereabouts while folks who opt for the 64GB model will have to fork out around $175 for one. While SSDs are faster than hard drives and could prove to be more stable since there are no moving parts, it is still pricier although that is now not too much a “con” as it used to be.

Folks who are looking for a SSD drive to put into their older notebook don’t have to distress about the lack of a SATA connector on the notebook, as Buffalo has come up with its SHD-NHPU2 PATA SSD. Since it uses the older PATA connector, instead of the current SATA connector, you shouldn’t have any issue using it on your older notebook. These 2.5-inch SSDs offer 64MB of cache and transfer speeds up to 101.3MB/s. that drive will be available in Japan at the end of the month and pricing should be $250 (32GB), $360 (64GB) and $630 (128GB), respectively.

OCZ has recently unveiled a couple of SSDs that duration round with the Vertex 2 and Agility 2, where they will be able to touch a maximum sequential read speeds of 285MB/sec and 275MB/sec for write speed, making both full well capable of performing 4K random writes at up to 50,000 IOPS on a Vertex, alongside a pretty respectable 10,000 IOPS for the more budget-inclined Agility line. Expect both the Vertex 2 and Agility 2 to ship in a few weeks’ moment, coming in capacities of 50GB, 100GB and 200GB, with plans for 400GB SSDs just right up ahead. Too poor there is no word on pricing as at press instance.
Over in Japan, Buffalo has announced a new series of solid state disks (SSD), the SHD-NSU2, which offers capacities of 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB, and will set you back $160, $230, $440, and $840 respectively. These drives will offer 64MB of DRAM cache, and offers read speeds up to 175MB/s, though surprisingly there isn’t any knowledge of write speeds. We certainly don’t mind more SSDs in the market; after all, competition is healthy. These SSDs will be available in Japan in April, and might even be available outside of Japan (fingers crossed).

TDK Corporation has unveiled its latest storage solution, the SHG2A half-slim type solid state drive (SSD). The SHG2A is targeted for use in industrial applications, as well as thin client PCs, tablets, smart phones and eBook readers. It offers storage capacities all the way up to 32GB, and in a package that’s roughly half the size of a 1.8-inch hard drive. It sports a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, 128-bit AES robotic encryption, and maximum read/write speeds of 95MB/s and 28MB/s respectively. The SHG2A SSDs will enter mass production in April, which is just around the corner.

OCZ is back with their new Onyx SATA II 2.5″ SSD which aims to offer you the best bang for your buck, where it relies on multi-level cell (MLC)-based SSDs with 64MB of integrated cache to store your goods. Performance-wise, you get info transfer speeds of up to 125MB/s while reading, and up to 70MB/s during write operations. Since there is a considerable lack of moving parts compared to regular hard drives, the Onyx SSD is more resistant to shock and temperature fluctuations, coming with a mean day before failure (MBTF) rating of 1.5 million hours. You can give that a skip whether capacity is your main priority since the Onyx will initially come in only one size – 32GB at that, retailing for under $100.
