Soldiers in the future should be getting more and more tech to carry around, and HP is working on some rather cool display technologies to help them. What HP is working on is a prototype of a solar-powered lightweight computer display that is flexible abundant to be wrapped around a soldier’s wrist. The display is only 200 microns thick, and can show useful info such as maps or directions and will be powered by solar cells. Prototypes will be offered to the military early next year, which should be something to look forward too. Said display technology utilizes the popular E-Ink display technology. So it looks like soldiers of the future will all sport a futuristic version of a Dick Tracy watch, eh?

Guess when their iPhones fail on the battlefield, troops can still reach at a designated point thanks to a location tracker that is based on microchip motion sensor technology courtesy of Tesella. Tessella is working with the European Space Agency on similar orientation software, where their sensors are lightweight in nature and can be by a soldier without bogging him/her down. A soldier’s position is detected thanks to a trio of microchip accelerometers and gyroscopes that are restricted within. that is very possible on paper, but it’s only an approximation that will induce error that add up overtime. The question of usefulness depends on how much research is put into it finally.

We previously brought the BrainPort to your attention, but now it seems that the technology has been successfully tested on a participant. BrainPort allows the participant, a soldier who was blinded in Iraq, to see via his tongue. The system consists of a small video camera attached to a pair of sunglasses, which is connected to a device that will be placed on the user’s tongue. The system converts visual signals into electrical pulses, which are soon after sent to the user’s tongue, and the intensity of the signals will allow the user to figure out the obstacles in his path. It certainly seems like an interesting piece of tech, and whether it is able to help folks who have a visual disability, soon after it’s certainly great news.

Nice to know our men in uniform who proudly and bravely defend our country will be getting prototype versions of flexible AM-Pholeds. It remains to be seen just which part of the battlefield operations will experience action with such prototypes, although we do know that the US Army has its eyes on enabling flexible PHOLED technology to be adorned on a soldier, perhaps to check out real instance directions from the top right on your sleeve without bogging you down with heavy equipment?
