New Hard Drives To Spell The End Of Windows XP?

New Hard Drives To Spell The End Of Windows XP?

Despite the release of Windows 7, there are still many users out there who are clinging on desperately to Windows XP. Now it seems that it may not be Microsoft who will force users to ditch the venerable OS, rather hard drive manufacturers. A recent report indicates that manufacturers are looking to move away from the ancient 512 byte sector size, which has been around for ages now, to a 4K sector size. By doing so, they’ll be able to offer about 7-11% more details on the disk, as there is less wasted space where documents cannot be stored due to the area committed to storing error codes.

Modern operating systems such as Windows 7, Vista, OS X Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard and all versions of the Linux kernel released after September 2009 are 4K aware, so there shouldn’t be a problem, but for operating systems older than that, it might be an issue. Advanced format drives should still be able to manage with Windows XP via emulation, but despite there being a minimal performance hit when reading from the drive, it’s possible that there might be a 10% performance dip when goods is being written. So it looks like XP has taken another small step to that big operating system heaven in the sky.

1984 Macintosh Runs OS X Snow Leopard

How’s that for something to impress your friends? Getting OS X Snow Leopard running on a 1984 Macintosh. Of course, before you start wondering how to get Snow Leopard running on the 8MHz processor, it’s worth taking note that the innards of it have been replaced, or you’d probably have to wait until next year before the desktop would finish booting, that’s whether you could get it to work. Details and pictures of the project are available at Instructables. Have you done any weird chassis mods or something similar before?

Atom support for Snow Leopard 10.6.2

Atom support for Snow Leopard 10.6.2

Russian hacker teateam is proud to announce that he has managed to restore support for Atom-based Hackintoshes which are powered by Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Apparently, Apple disabled the processor in a revision to the kernel in 10.6.2, removing support for the Atom processor which results in updated netbooks being useless. Well, not any more - teateam managed to patch the new kernel successfully, and so far users have reported nothing but success. Too poor that Atom crack isn't as simple as "point-and-click", so get ready a mug of coffee and check out the hack details here.
