There has been quite a bit of hype by smartbooks recently, though the reality is that there hardly is any smartbook in the market at the moment, despite the fact that models such as Lenovo’s Skylight were supposed to be launched in April, it’s now May and you’d be hard pressed to find one in stores near you. An ARM representative has taken the instance to give a few reasons as to why there is the delay in the release of smartbooks. First off, it seems that Flash isn’t entirely ready just yet, and hasn’t been optimized for ARM based platforms. Next comes the tricky subject of tablets, where manufacturers might have some trouble with tablets and smartbooks competing with each other. Finally, there is plus the subject of Linux, as Linux-based netbooks never really took off as well as those powered by Windows XP. Bundle all those points together, and you more or less have a rough concept as to what’s keeping smartbooks off the shelves at the moment.

Folks who have been thinking of getting Lenovo’s Skylight smartbook will undoubtedly be disappointed by the recent delay in the smartbook, but it seems like there is a good reason behind it. Word is going around that Lenovo delayed the launch of it in order to further tweak the device’s performance, identifying the iPad as its main competitor. While the device uses Qualcomm’s speedy Snapdragon processor with a Linux-based operating system, it seems that the device’s control isn’t as smooth as the iPad, which might be one of the reasons that led to the recent delay. It’s worth remembering that the iPad has the backing of a huge App Store, Apple branding and a very user friendly interface, so whether the iPad really is the Skylight’s main competitor, it’s in for a serious battle.

Firstview HK Electronic Limited has come up with a SmartBook that will only cost $65 to manufacture, dubbed the Nike PC706V. While we’re not certain whether a convinced sports company will see red by the name, we do know that it is powered by Google’s Android 1.6, but has the potential to be upgraded to the latest Android 2.1. Depending on the configuration, the device could cost within $65 to $200, but its low entry cost should help kickstart the SmartBook market. Specifications of the Nike PC706V include:

The folks at the FCC has revealed that the HP Compaq AirLife 100 has started to assemble its rounds in their offices, coming in model numbers HSTNH-F23C or FB240AA. Apart from that, we don’t really know anything else about that upcoming computing device since the FCC documents did not reveal additional knowledge. Some public have speculated that that could be the unidentified HP Smartbook prototype which was powered by Android at CES 2010, but apart from that, HP did not reveal news on other smartbooks, making that a particularly decent candidate.

Intel certainly isn’t going to be too happy at HP’s announcement that its checking Qualcomm’s ARM Cortex based Snapdragon chip for use in its smartbook. Intel has been dominating the netbook market with its Atom processor, but Snapdragon is certainly going to be a formidable opponent in the mobile computing scene. Apparently Qualcomm and HP have agreed to come up with a smartbook based on Snapdragon. The device should be powered by Google’s Android and the Snapdragon QSD8250 chipset with an integrated Scorpion central processing unit. How will the tablet computers affect Intel’s Atom market share, will give Qualcomm a fighting chance to take on Intel?

[CES 2010] At CES Unveiled, Marvell let us play with a smartbook reference design apparently called SMART.You can’t tell from the photos, but it is extremely light (it’s nearly weird), but don’t nag we got used to it pretty rapidly. The first thing that I checked was the relative speed (responsiveness of the UI). The good news is: it’s decent. I suspect that the graphics acceleration isn’t fully implemented (I hope), but we’ll have to check it again on a real product. The video playback of Ice Age was really good and stutter-free. It wasn’t clear what the specifications where, but I suspect that it was a 2Ghz Armada 510. Don’t quote me on that, however. The screen was about 11″ big and, whether the software is as good as the hardware (that’s a big if), we could see some interesting designs. Let’s wait and see, but on the hardware side, the demonstration is convincing.
