March 9, 2010

Firstview HK Electronic Limited has come up with a SmartBook that will only cost $65 to manufacture, dubbed the Nike PC706V. While we’re not certain whether a convinced sports company will see red by the name, we do know that it is powered by Google’s Android 1.6, but has the potential to be upgraded to the latest Android 2.1. Depending on the configuration, the device could cost within $65 to $200, but its low entry cost should help kickstart the SmartBook market. Specifications of the Nike PC706V include:

HP Compaq AirLife 100 appears on FCC
January 22, 2010

The folks at the FCC has revealed that the HP Compaq AirLife 100 has started to assemble its rounds in their offices, coming in model numbers HSTNH-F23C or FB240AA. Apart from that, we don't really know anything else about that upcoming computing device since the FCC documents did not reveal additional knowledge. Some public have speculated that that could be the unidentified HP Smartbook prototype which was powered by Android at CES 2010, but apart from that, HP did not reveal news on other smartbooks, making that a particularly decent candidate.

HP Choses Snapdragon by Atom
January 8, 2010

Intel certainly isn’t going to be too happy at HP’s announcement that its checking Qualcomm’s ARM Cortex based Snapdragon chip for use in its smartbook. Intel has been dominating the netbook market with its Atom processor, but Snapdragon is certainly going to be a formidable opponent in the mobile computing scene. Apparently Qualcomm and HP have agreed to come up with a smartbook based on Snapdragon. The device should be powered by Google’s Android and the Snapdragon QSD8250 chipset with an integrated Scorpion central processing unit. How will the tablet computers affect Intel’s Atom market share, will give Qualcomm a fighting chance to take on Intel?

Marvell Smart, smartbook reference design
January 6, 2010

[CES 2010] At CES Unveiled, Marvell let us play with a smartbook reference design apparently called SMART.You can't tell from the photos, but it is extremely light (it's nearly weird), but don't nag we got used to it pretty rapidly. The first thing that I checked was the relative speed (responsiveness of the UI). The good news is: it's decent. I suspect that the graphics acceleration isn't fully implemented (I hope), but we'll have to check it again on a real product. The video playback of Ice Age was really good and stutter-free. It wasn't clear what the specifications where, but I suspect that it was a 2Ghz Armada 510. Don't quote me on that, however. The screen was about 11" big and, whether the software is as good as the hardware (that’s a big if), we could see some interesting designs. Let's wait and see, but on the hardware side, the demonstration is convincing.

Smartbook AG has found a way to attract your attention with the Zenid GC Crystal netbook which comes covered with a lavish number of Swarovski crystals. Apart from the blinged up exterior, it will feature the standard netbook specificatoins such as a 10.2" WXGA LED display, an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor, 2GB RAM and Wi-Fi connectivity. The non-bling version retails for 299 euros, while the dressed-to-the-nines version is going for a whopping 2,001 Euros. At least that is less foolish than the $3.2 million iPhone 3GS Supreme...
