Hilary Hayes, an industrial design student at the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) in Toronto, Canada, has come up with a smart scarf that boasts a dynamic light pattern which depends on your breathing. A LilyPad temperature sensor will play nice with the LilyPad Arduino, while potential supply modules ensure that the scarf is well juiced to perform as intended. The temperature sensor itself is located near the mouth, allowing it to pick up the temperature variations which is soon after translated by the LilyPad to various points instead of the standard degrees measurement, making that scarf wearable even when it is not during chilly winter months. All the LEDs in the scarf will fade in and out in sync with your breathing, making you look way cooler than you already are. We do wonder how faraway the batteries will last though.

The iPhone’s different mold factor is instantly recognizable by most citizens nowadays, and Apple was smart sufficient to apply for the patent on the iPhone 3G profile factor, which has now been granted by the USPTO. The patent describes it as “a new, original and ornamental design for an electronic device”, which includes computers, portable or handheld electronic devices and media players etc. The interesting thing about the patent application is that there doesn’t seem to be a home button on the reference design. perhaps we’ll be looking to an iPhone that uses a touch-sensitive home button in the future?

Can’t decide what to do with all that wasted energy from the howling wind outside? whether you’re smart and good with your hands, you can do what that user did, which is build a contraption that harnesses the wind to help it knit a scarf. The size of your scarf is more or less limited by the amount of yarn fed into the machine, and it does look like a lazy man’s dream come true. What else can you build Mother Nature do for you?

The smart researchers by at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada are busy working on a new type of flexible display. Code-named Cobra, it works by combining a wearable computer and shoulder-mounted pico-projector coupled with a flexible display that has flex-sensing wires and sensors. What that means is that users will be able to interact with the system via the screen itself. In theory, you could bend a corner back and release it to simulate the shooting of an arrow or casting a fishing line. It’s pretty cool, and it’ll be interesting whether that technology became mainstream in the gaming market.

The Smart E USB Extender might just be a concept as at instance of publishing, but it could very well be more than a decent release in the real world whether someone decides to take up the task. After all, it does help you pull out the right plug thanks to sockets at all four ends which ensures you won’t fumble by which wire to pull and which not to touch. We like the way different logos will light up to tell you whether you have plugged in a keyboard or mouse, while the percentage figure seen shows just how much juice the plugged in device has.

Chris Francklyn, Diana George, Jenna Sobieray and Alex Cossoff – all of them students, have come up with an interesting DIY project – “How to manufacture a Heating and Cooling Jacket”. that jacket is smart abundant to check the temperature within the jacket itself, turning on either the heating or cooling elements as called for in order to maintain a constant temperature. The LilyPad will operate as the brains of the jacket, interpreting temperature documents collected from six sensors located all by. Interesting, and it will definitely take more than a weekend to have it sorted out.

This probably isn’t the most pleasant gadget to review, but whether it benefits society in the enlarged run, why not, right? The SIMsystem (Smart Incontinence Management) is used to help folks who are unable to control their bladder. The system has underpants equipped with a disposable pad with a wetness sensor, recording the incontinence info, and sending it to a central computer via ZigBee standard, which is a low-power and low-range wireless transfer standard. When incontinence takes place, a text heads up can be transmitted to the paging system, alerting the caretaker to do the needful, thus reducing the discomfort of the patient. Do you think we’ll see that system in hospitals anytime soon?

A recent patent application by Apple shows that the fruity company is working on a rather interesting speaker phone feature for the iPhone. Instead of having to activate the speaker phone manually, the patent indicates that the phone could be smart suitable to use its built-in camera to “see” the environment and determine whether the speakerphone should be turned on. The phone would even be smart suitable to compare images that it has stored and the images that it’s currently seeing to determine whether the speaker phone should be turned on. So whether you’re always disabling the speaker phone while leaving your iPhone in the cup holder, chances are that it could be smart ample to not activate it when you place it there again.

The smart engineers by at the University of British Columbia’s Human Communications Technology Lab have come up with a very interesting 3D cube, dubbed the pCubee. It’s a cube with displays on all six sides of it, and boasts perspective-corrected rendering and motion-detecting. With each display showing one perspective of an image, you’re given the illusion that you’re looking into a 3–dimensional space, and you can even interact with the images on the display. It’s still currently a research project, but it certainly looks like it has potential. Check out a video of the pCubee in action in the full spread.
