There has been quite a bit of hype by smartbooks recently, though the reality is that there hardly is any smartbook in the market at the moment, despite the fact that models such as Lenovo’s Skylight were supposed to be launched in April, it’s now May and you’d be hard pressed to find one in stores near you. An ARM representative has taken the instance to give a few reasons as to why there is the delay in the release of smartbooks. First off, it seems that Flash isn’t entirely ready just yet, and hasn’t been optimized for ARM based platforms. Next comes the tricky subject of tablets, where manufacturers might have some trouble with tablets and smartbooks competing with each other. Finally, there is plus the subject of Linux, as Linux-based netbooks never really took off as well as those powered by Windows XP. Bundle all those points together, and you more or less have a rough concept as to what’s keeping smartbooks off the shelves at the moment.

To satisfy potential customers, Samsung releases two new CMOS image sensors of smaller size and higher picture quality. Size, they say, is additionally very fundamental as LCD displays are getting thinner and thinner, so potentially manufacturer may choose a smaller webcam sensor that is worse rather than bulkier one. Both of new Samsung CMOS sensors are nearly ready for mass production and will seem on the shelves coupled with laptops and netbooks in Q2.

Several reports on the web have surfaced about a possible issue with Core i7 920 orders at NewEgg – that is one of Intel’s most popular processor (about $270). Apparently, a small number of them are stand-in/demo boxes with a dummy CPU and fan inside. From the couple of YouTube videos (if they are authentic), it looks like dummy boxes that could have been used to validate a design or on the shelves of a store (for illustration purposes).

HotHardware says that both Newegg and Intel have been notified, and that the problem would be limited to 300 boxes on a shipment of 2000. I’m not certain how such a percentage of dummies could manufacture it into a shipment, but I guess that it’s technically possible for someone to sneak those in. You would think that barcodes and other controls would prevent that.

Anyway, Newegg is reportedly issuing RMAs (return authorizations) to those who have received a dummy, so it should end happily. Again, note that that has not been confirmed officially by Intel or Newegg, so take that with caution.

Are you very serious about your privacy and defense? While there aren’t many (if any) cryptographically secure phones for you to buy off the shelves, but Android phones might just become able to fulfill that need for you sometime soon. The Guardian Project is planning to come up with a Guardian Android device, which would offer you an anonymous browser, encrypted mail, secure voice calls and secure info sync. that could possibly be any Android-compatible device, updated with a tweaked firmware. Tweaking would probably involve the removal of positive hardware drivers, fiddling with the kernel, runtime, virtual machine, and updating (or replacing) some existing apps. whether everything goes peachy keen, the end user shouldn’t notice all these tweaks, and the phone should still offer the enhanced defense and privacy features. Would you be concerned abundant about privacy to go down that path, or do you think that the current Android-powered phones in the market are secure sufficient? A video on that project is available after the jump.

It seems that the HTC Dream isn’t the only phone on Rogers’ network to be affected by the 911 bug. Next in line is the HTC Magic, and the carrier is issuing the same warning to HTC Magic owners, recommending them to disable the GPS location feature on their phones. that certainly isn’t going to be very pleasant for owners of these phones, so hopefully Rogers will get that sorted out soon. whether you do own one of these affected phones, you can disable the GPS location feature with the following steps:

Select Menu

Select Settings

Select Location

Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite
