Offering Apple’s iPhone always seems to put a strain on any carrier’s network, as AT&T found out the hard way. Now Vodafone UK might be feeling the pinch too, as the carrier has confirmed, via its forum, that it’s planning to impose some new charges from June 1st onwards. While the carrier will still be offering 500MB of documents with any bundle plan worth £25 or more, but users who go past the 500MB threshold will be charged £5 for every additional 500MB that they use. Folks who are on a plan that doesn’t include any details will be charged 50p for every 10MB of documents by the basic 25MB. While £5 isn’t a lot of money, nobody likes having to shell out additional moolah, particularly since the carrier previously had 500MB as a fair use threshold, but didn’t charge or throttle the connection unless it started to create problems on the network. Acer looks set to roll out its new range of Mobile Web Devices (MIDs) sometime later that May, where they will be a logical follow up on their patent application which was filed all the way back in January last year. The Taiwanese company did not mention just precisely what these MIDs are capable of, although they have confirmed that it will run on version 4.0 of their Shell UI. Shell UI is a layer that was applied by Windows Mobile on smartphones, and the latest version will hopefully appeal to users at the home stretch. No view on whether Shell UI 4.0 will be built on top of Windows Mobile though, but since May is slightly more than a month away, we are ready and willing to wait.

Is Amazon feeling the pressure from the impending launch of Apple’s iPad?
