If you’re a gamer that purchases original non-pirated games (like we all should), thereupon you’re probably familiar with the troublesome DRM (digital rights management) features that are stuffed into games in order to circumvent piracy. Ubisoft’s always-on DRM solution, the Online Services Network, has been criticized by many folks, as it requires gamers to have a constant connection to the World Wide Web in order to play their games. Now hackers have managed to circumvent the DRM in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed 2 game, allowing users to enjoy the game without having to concern about the DRM mechanism. Hacks to get around Ubisoft’s DRM servers were available before that, but they used a less efficient way to do it. Of course, we’re not advocating piracy, but it’ll be interesting whether there will be some middle ground that game developers will be able to work out with gamers. After all, everybody just want to enjoy the game, right?

RIM’s North American BIS servers were out of action for a while by the weekend since they were undergoing an upgrade from BIS 2.8 to BIS 3.0, which means your devices ought to be able to take advantage of new BIS 3.0 features by now. Google Mail integration is still in the works back on the 28th, but we do know that some of the changes would include additional language support for Basque, Catalan, Galician, Romanian, increased attachment compatibility for OpenDocument presentations (.odp), OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods), OpenDocument text (.odt), OpenDocument text templates (.ott), Windows Media Audio (.wma), improved mail setup flow for HTML access that will allow BlackBerry uses to “reclaim their mail address whether their BlackBerry Net Service history is ever deleted.”, xHTML Support for non-Thick Clients (allows for the use of buttons, additional fonts and color controls when users access and toggle their user settings), device switch revalidation and hosted e mail address passwords.

Samsung has started to ship samples of its 40nm-based 32GB DRAM modules that will target servers which require high density and performance without sucking up too much juice from the grid. These modules comprise of Samsung’s recently unveiled 36 dual-die 40nm class 4GB DDR3 chips which offer at worst, on par performance with the 40nm 16GB RDIMM modules. According to Samsung, a two-way server is now able to achieve a maximum RAM option of up to 384GB as compared to 192GB with 16GB modules. Expect mass production of the 40nm 32GB RDIMM to being from April onwards.

Something strange was going on with the World Wide Web night last, and it seems that traffic to several popular sites such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook were redirected to servers in China, which effectively put society behind the famous Great Firewall of China, giving users a taste of what World Wide Web users in China see when they try to access those blocked sites. Apparently the issue could be related to the Domain Name System (DNS), though the issue seems to have been fixed. Of course, the question on everybody’s lips is whether that is related to Google’s recent spat with the Chinese government, or is it just a badly-timed accident? Did you notice anything weird happening with your Web recently?

Mark June 17 on your calendars as that would be when the OnLive ’Games-on-Demand’ service powered by cloud-servers arrives. Steve Perlman and Mike McGarvey, founders of OnLive, has taken the opportunity to announce the subscription plans for the service for both PCs and Macs, albeit only for folks living in the US, with no word on availability and their respective subscription plans for the European region at the moment. What is OnLive? It is a ‘Games on Demand’ service powered by Cloud-servers and based on subscription model. The moment you access the huge library of games, you can play them instantly by the Web without having to nag about system compatibility and going through the whole tedious installation process. With 720p HD quality video gaming, expect to spend more day cooped up at home now. For more context, check out our hands-on of the OnLive Game Service at last year’s GDC.
