Many of you might already know that the 3.21 firmware update for Sony’s PlayStation 3 disables the OtherOS functionality from the console, which effectively means that you can’t install Linux on it anymore. While hackers have been busy enabling the feature back on the console, some consumers think it’s better to file a class action lawsuit against the company, as in the case of Anthony Venture who has done just that. The lawsuit covers all PS3 consoles purchased from November 17th 2006 to March 27th 2010. The lawsuit calls for compensatory damages, restitution, injunctive relief and legal fees to be paid by Sony, and a figure of $5 million has been mentioned. You might have thought that Polaroid was done for a few years back, but now the company has come out and stated that it’s planning to enter the gaming scene, which is a big shift from its usual forte – cameras. Apparently that won’t be Polaroid’s first foray into the gaming scene, as the company offered a 15-in-1 game controller about two years back. The company now plans to offer sports packs and a sensor bar for the Wii, a microphone headset and battery packs for the Xbox 360, third-party wireless controllers for the PS3 and a dock for the Nintendo DS. For those who can’t be too bothered about running another operating system on their PS3, how about taking the opportunity to invent some money? It seems that someone at the NeoGAF forums decided to slug it out with Amazon, quoting a European consumer protection law which states all products bought must be “fit for the purpose which the consumer requires them and which was made known to the seller at the moment of purchase,” resulting in a £84 refund. Best of all is, he didn’t even need to return his PS3 and neither does his console have to be under the warranty period. Bear in mind that that law applies to those living in Europe only at the moment – perhaps legal eagles could help us out as to whether that is similar Stateside as well? Of course, you should only take up your case whether you do not have any unofficial hack installed.

Sony has only released the PS3 3.21 firmware update a few days ago, and Geohot (the popular hacker) has already managed to hack the firmware, reinstating the removed “OtherOS” feature, which allows you to install another OS (duh). The hack can be done without having to crack open your PS3, and all you have to do is restore a custom generated PUP file. There is even a slim possibility that that hack might be able to get the “OtherOS” feature to work on the PS3 Slim, but you’ll have to cross your fingers and wait and see. There isn’t an actual release moment on that hack yet, but we’ll be keeping an eye on it. Check out a video demonstrating it.
