Wi-Lan Inc, a Canadian technology licensing company, seems to be feeling rather courageous, as it has filed a lawsuit accusing a good number of big name companies on the market of patent infringement. The company has targeted the likes of Apple, Gateway, Toshiba, HP and Intel, accusing them of violating three patents which deal primarily with Wi-Fi technology and ability saving technology for DSL products. The company said in a statement that it wants the defendants to sign licensing agreements with Wi-Lan for the rights to use its technology. In case you were wondering, the three patents are patent numbers 5,282,222, RE37802 and 5,956,323.

Nowadays it’s rare to see a day go by where some big company isn’t being sued for patent infringement or something along those lines. Now it seems that Emblaze, the folks behind the Else, which was on display at CES 2010, have served both Microsoft and Apple with a lawsuit, claiming that both companies infringe on its patent. Apparently the company isn’t happy with Microsoft’s Silverlight Smooth Streaming and Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming, as it owns a patent on Network Media Streaming, which dates back to 1999. Do you think that there is any merit in that, or is Emblaze trying to assemble a quick buck by taking on two of the giants in the tech industry? whether you’ve invested in Emblaze shares, you’ll probably smile when you take in that the company’s shares have risen by 13.5 percent (at the date of writing).

TiVo might have quite a battle on its hands, as Microsoft has sued TiVo by an alleged patent infringement in its DVRs. TiVo is accused of copying Microsoft’s Mediaroom IPTV technology in the DVRs themselves, the software and the subscription based service. whether that goes Microsoft’s way, it would effectively block TiVo from selling DVRs without a licensing deal. that suit is similar to AT&T’s lawsuit against TiVo, claiming that the media boxes violate patents from AT&T’s VDSL-based U-Verse service. The good news (for TiVo) is that Microsoft has begun talks with the company to reach a deal without going through the courts, so possibly they’ll be able to work something out amongst themselves.
