You might not have heard of BumpTop before, but now that Google has acquired the company, you can be certain that more folks will compose out of it. The company churned out a pretty nice multi-touch 3D desktop design that could be implemented into Windows 7 and OS X, and with Google’s acquisition of the company, we’re really interested to see whether there will be some interesting new features in Google’s Android and Chrome OSes. With everybody jumping on the multi-touch and 3D bandwagon nowadays, it shouldn’t be too lengthy before 3D desktops become the norm. There wasn’t any figure mentioned related to the acquisition, though you’re free to speculate as you wish. Check out a video of it in action after the jump

It seems as though Microsoft is ready to announce a release period for its Windows Mobile 7 operating platform. Rumor has it that the software itself will be available to Microsoft’s handheld hardware partners come that September, which would translate to Windows Mobile 7-based devices by the end of the year at best or early Q1 2011 at worst. Folks speaking other than English or common European languages will be disappointed, as those are the only languages catered to at that point in moment. Availability of the Asian localizations are tipped for a 2011 release, so take note whether you happen to live in that part of the world. Expect Windows Mobile 7 to ship with an improved user interface, Zune, Xbox Live and Silverlight support. We hope that Windows Mobile 7 will see Microsoft invent the most of it in what could be its Waterloo where smartphone OSes are concerned.

VMWare has plans to develop virtualization technology which enables a couple of operating systems to run simultaneously on a one cellphone. They are currently not at the promised land just yet, but are slowly working towards that direction by optimizing the virtualization technology in order for the incoming/outgoing details from each OS to be managed efficiently and securely, while ensuring that switching from one OS to another will be a seamless and intuitive experience. VMware hopes to tryout its dual OS phones in an enterprise environment from 2011 onwards, while the mass market might expect that cellphone to enter production a year after that.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin revealed that the two operating systems from the company, Chrome and Android, were “likely to converge by duration,” without offering any specific moment for our reference. that is interesting news, and it would certainly bode well for developers as they won’t need to compose too many modifications to the coding when releasing an application for both mobile devices and computers, but does that mean the merged OS on a PC will be rather gimped since it will need to cater to the lowest common denominator, which would be a smartphone? After all, smartphones are still far behind in processing ability even when compared against netbooks.
