Intel has announced its new platform includes an Intel Atom Processor (Z6xx Series), the Controller Hub MP20 and a committed Mixed Signal IC (MSIC). Intel has been able to reduce idle mode potential consumption by up to 50X, which is critical considering handsets and tablets tend to be always on, often in idle mode. According to Intel, the new platform can additionally play audio for 2 days straight, but play video only for 4-5 hours (on a 1500mAh battery, and compared to the “Menlow” generation of Atom). Here’s an example of what a real Intel-powered phone looks like.

We can’t wait to see what devices will come out in the next few quarters. As for the Operating system, Intel will promote Meego, which was freshly announced at Mobile World Congress in February. Of course, Windows is always an option.

Despite all the good news, Intel still has some ways to go before displacing ARM-based chips from NVIDIA, Broadcom or Marvell, but Intel has been driving its products in ARM’s turf, much faster than ARM can go into Intel’s territory.

Zotac has a spanking new ZBOX that measures a diminutive 7.4″ x 7.4″ x 1.73″, but despite its size, it is still more than capable of handling all of your movie playback aspirations. While it was first announced in March, it seems that reviewers are starting to get hold of it, which points toward it being made available to end users pretty soon. Guess HTPCs have just taken on a totally new design factor, and with the introduction of NVIDIA’s Ion processor, you can be certain that that is one notion that will not remain untouched for expanded by other computer manufacturers.

Eurocom might have let the cat out of the bag a little early as it has updated the specifications of its X8100 Leopard mobile workstation notebook to include a GeForce GTX 480M graphics chip, probably to replace NVIDIA’s 280M. The chip is described as using the Fermi architecture, and offers a large 2GB worth of video memory on the chip, as well as being churned out using the 40 nanometer process of the newer GeForce chipsets. Based on the description, it’s very possible that that chip might be extremely ability hungry, as the figure of 100W was mentioned, though it wasn’t clear whether that meant TDP or ability requirements. The PC builder expects the new hardware to be available in June, which should be a good indication of a broader launch which includes other major manufacturers. Are you looking forward to a new graphics solution for laptops?

Lineup consists of two options. First one is ENGTX480 based on GTX480 and, as we have it, has precisely the same specifications. So has with GTX470-based ENGTX470. Performance of both, or what is even more critical its comparison with ATI Radeon HD 5970 is arguable. But that should not be the topic of that post. So far, check out ENGTX480 and ENGTX470 specifications after the jump.

Adobe has just released Gala, the first version of Flash for the Mac that supports GPU-based hardware acceleration, taking advantage of OS X 10.6.3’s hardware video decoding API, pushing the task of decoding H.264 videos to the graphics chipset rather than the main processor, easing the strain on the system and helping to preserve battery life. It requires a contemporary NVIDIA video chip, such as the GeForce 9400M, 320M or the GT 330M. Users shouldn’t need to change their usage patterns, but there will be a small square in the corner to indicate when GPU acceleration is in progress.

When you first lay your eyes on that, chances are you will think that that is some sort of HTPC or small mold factor machine from a computer manufacturer. You will be pleasantly surprise to find out that that is the brainchild and handiwork of Andrew Macdonald, who came up with the case mod with his Xbox as an inspiration. that passively cooled machine will come with HDMI, optical and coax S/PDIF, eSATA, and USB connectivity alongside 802.11n Wi-Fi support and a hot-swappable drive bay. An Intel Atom 330 1.6GHz processor is accompanied by NVIDIA ION graphics, 4GB RAM and a custom Windows XP hack running Boxee Beta as its operating system of choice. An internal flash drive helps keep things running quiet underneath the chassis.

NVIDIA is currently working to unify its entire range of GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) drivers in order for both desktop and mobile users to apply the latest releases simultaneously without having to sit around and wait for weeks on end sometimes. Of course, both desktop and notebook drivers won’t come in the same package, although each one will be marked clear suitable not to be missed on the download page. Bear in mind that the unified release driver will play nice only with notebooks that sport discrete GPUs, hybrid solutions utilizing NVIDIA-branded IGPs and Optimus-enabled machines, so those using multi-vendor solutions will miss out on that.

Netbooks generally aren’t dominant devices, but the upcoming Eee PC 1215N from Asus might be able to change that perception. The most notable thing about that netbook will be its dual-core Atom N500 processor, as well as NVIDIA’s next-generation ION chip, along with NVIDIA Optimus technology. There isn’t any mention of how good that netbook’s battery life will be, but hopefully it will be able to live up to the current expectations of battery life for netbooks. Word is going around that the 1215N will be available in June, and while there isn’t any official confirmation on that just yet, we’re certainly looking forward to it.
