Opera Download Numbers Double Thanks To The Introduction Of Choice Screen

The folks by at Opera must be smiling from ear to ear after Microsoft was forced to introduce the Windows Web Browser Choice Screen in Europe. The Web Browser Choice Screen prompts users whether they want to download competing browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera etc. Now Opera is reporting that the number of downloads has more than doubled across the European continent, with some countries even indicating that the download rate has tripled. According to the stats released, 53% of the downloads came from the Choice Screen, and considering that the Choice Screen was rolled out in early March, it certainly provides an interesting twist in the browser wars.

Press release.

Microsoft Preparing Service Pack 1 For Windows 7 And Windows Server 2008 R2

Microsoft has started to talk about Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), as well as Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Despite Microsoft not officially announcing a beta or instance of release for the service pack, word is going around that SP1 might be arriving as early as that month. Windows Server 2008 R2 will be getting some rather cool features for Microsoft’s desktop virtualization platform, namely Microsoft Dynamic Memory and Microsoft RemoteFX. Windows 7 will be getting the usual bunch of hotfixes, as well as an updated Remote Desktop client that takes advantage of the newly-introduced RemoteFX on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

More knowledge by at Microsoft’s official announcement.

Windows Phone 7 Demo at SXSW

March 18, 2010

Editor's note about the Video: the demo was done on a vertical monitor, I shot it in portrait, you may have to turn you screen to watch it more comfortably.

[SXSW] Microsoft launched Windows Phone 7 at MWC in Barcelona and we saw the demo there, yesterday, the Microsoft representative at SXSW showed me a demo and I videotaped it, so, you can check it out. Windows Phone 7 is still in beta mode and the user interface is similar to the Zune HD's one is based on tiles that are visually appealing and friendly to the fingers. I like the design and the ease of use, the organization of the users' goods with tiles and "hubs" brings most of the user's notes access at the top level (the phone home page).

Microsoft Windows Phone 7 series theme

Microsoft Windows Phone 7 series theme

While Microsoft has made it known that that most Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets won't be able to construct the upgrade jump to the Windows Phone 7 Series, there is still a small trick left - relying on the beta version of a Windows Phone 7 theme for Windows Mobile. Getting your game on is pretty simple by downloading and installing a .cab file, where among the features made available will include Live tiles with rotating pictures, a Bing search utility with a background that will change to match the Bing picture of the day, as well as a program launcher which resembles the Windows Phone 7 Series/Zune HD app launcher. Don't expect that to be refined since it is still in beta mode.

Microsoft XNA Game Studio 4.0

March 11, 2010

Microsoft XNA Game Studio 4.0

Windows Phone 7 will feature Xbox integration, but apart from that, Microsoft didn't let any other cats out of the proverbial bag. Well, that could change soon with more clues unearthed about the future of mobile gaming on Microsoft's new mobile platform. The introduction of XNA Game Studio 4.0 will go some ways in making game development for the Windows Phone 7 platform a whole lot easier, since developers can create a game/app and produce tweak it to run the Xbox 360 and Windows-based PCs as well. Microsoft has confirmed that it will be equipped with hardware accelerated 3D APIs specific for Windows Phone 7. Kudos to Microsoft for letting their hair down with that - the ball is in the developer's court to come up with something good now!

Windows Phone 7 Sheds Backwards Compatibility

Windows Phone 7 Sheds Backwards Compatibility

After having face to face talks with Microsoft, we have learned that Windows Phone 7 won't run any Windows Mobile 6.x (and earlier) applications. The lack of compatibility talks during the Mobile World Congress made us think that that was the case, but now that is official.

Microsoft says that it had to do a clean break for the greater good - and they are probably right. certain it's annoying to the 6.x app developer considering they will have to do some work (possibly a lot) to invent their app work on Windows Phone 7, but that basically prevents the "easy way" of just leaving things the way they were.

Microsoft is counting on XNA, the popular platform for Indie and casual game on Xbox, Silverlight and .NET to be the foundation of most of the development. Microsoft did not want to comment on whether or not a C++ and DirectX approach was possible. More details will be revealed next week at the Game Developers Conference and on March at MIX, a Microsoft event.

The Engadget Show saw a Windows Phone 7 handset from Microsoft being revealed to the world, and that early prototype is manufactured by LG. that QWERTY slider does look like the eXpo a whole lot, and we do know that that device sports a 5-megapixel camera and will need to comply with Microsoft's chassis guidelines which comprises of a three-button interface, a fast processor and an 800 x 480 resolution or larger touchscreen display. Expect to see that miracle handset ignite the fight among the smartphone community later that year.
