Hmmm, the iPad isn’t out officially for the masses just yet, but it has already undergone a hack job thanks to developer Jonathan E. Vi. He apparently managed to rig it to be powered by Apple’s ancient Newton OS that was used to run Apple’s own personal notes assistant (PDA) from the early 1990s. Of course, that isn’t a full OS per se since it runs on a Newton emulator app, where the iPad’s display will automatically change to that muted green color alongside dim gray text and beloved old Mac fonts. No word on whether the App Store will approve of that, but it does bring back memories of one of the rare failures from Apple.

We would have thought that a company like HP would concentrate more on printers as well as computers, but here’s news that they are rolling out a new camcorder for folks who want more than just still images as memories. The HP V1020h is a stylish pocket camcorder that shoots 720p video, featuring an integrated USB connector, a HDMI port, 128MB of integrated memory and an SDHC memory card slot to further augment it. Expect the HP V1020h to retail for a relatively affordable $109 as it hits the market sometime that summer – at that price point, whether it includes all the higher end functions like anti-shake and image stabilization, we’re stoked.

Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2010 which will be held at Barcelona, Spain, next week is the platform where Inbrics announces its new Android-powered MID M1 which will come with a 3.7″ AMOLED touchscreen display alongside a slide-out QWERTY keyboard just in case dealing with a virtual keyboard is just not your cup of tea. Of course, you get the entire range of connectivity options that most of us take for granted these days, including Wi-Fi, GPS support, Bluetooth, 3G or WiMAX. Apart from that, there is a 3-megapixel camera to capture your impromptu memories on the go, a front-facing VGA camera for video calls, 16GB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot. The Inbrics M1 doubles up as a phone and a media controller for multiple devices, and we are still wary on how well that will sell. We believe a lot of it will hinge on the price point, so let us wait until Inbrics rolls it out to the mass market officially that year or early 2011.

Rewind your memories and see whether you remember CueCat – a bar cipher reader that supposedly connects magazine readers with digital material. Never heard of it? That’s OK – Microsoft ought to do a better job promoting its upcoming Microsoft Tag, which could very well be CueCat reincarnated (a cat has nine lives after all, doesn’t it?). Microsoft Tag keeps up with the times, however, by doing away with the need for a tag, but it does require your cellphone to have a camera in order to scan a specific bar cipher, allowing digital composition to seem on the phone itself after doing so. Such tags can be placed in magazines, newspapers, business cards, products as well as large outdoor signs, making it the hyperlink in the physical realm. No notion on how Microsoft will monetize Tag, but it will remain free at the moment until they figure something out. For more context, check out the YouTube video above.

Do you expanded for the good ol’ days, where you were playing games like Street Fighter II (SFII)? You may not have those consoles in your home anymore, but you could always pick up one of these key chains from Bandai, shaped in the profile of a NES controller. The cute part is, whether you press a combination such as down, down, right, right + punch, it’ll give off the sound effect of the corresponding move in the game. There are 3 key chains for SFII, giving off different sound effects for characters from the game. According to Bandai, listening to sounds from your favorite game makes you feel happy (though we’re not certain whether you feel that way). It’s currently retailing for 888 Yen ($10) in Japan.

Who would have thought that your regular LED-powered flashlight could actually double up as a spy camera? The camera module is located right smack in the middle of the LED flashlight, although we’re not too certain what kind of movie quality you end up with when the flashlight is shining brighter than the star which shone above Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. Given specifications include the ability to shoot videos in VGA quality at 30fps and phoros in 1,600 x 1,200 resolution, with 2GB of internal memory to back up all your memories while a microSDHC memory card slot helps augment its storage capacity even further.
