SnapStream is talking about its new DVR appliance that can record up to 50 channels simultaneously onto 100TB worth of storage capacity. SnapStream is plus writing the software to control that monster (they used to be my favorite Media Center system considering they could record in DivX). that is equivalent to 326 Tivo Premier boxes, and it’s a closet-size box. In the back, a individual coax cable is the input for all that video composition. Arguably, the more interesting part is that SnapStream has tools to search the substance. Their system is used by TV show production teams that need to find recent footage quickly. The Daily Show uses their tech, apparently. Ironically, it’s more channels than are available in most countries. Specs in the full posts.

[DEMO Spring 2010] A couple of days ago, we told you that Kylo had just launched a web browser for televisions. Based on a 10-foot interface (that’s the name given for user interfaces created particularly for a TV use), the browser aims at providing a much better web browsing experience than the plain-vanilla browsers built for a “normal” use. Typical users for that browser are those who connect their PC to the PC to use it as a media center. Look at the demo and let us know what you think in the comments.

[DEMO 2010] We have selected the GlideTV Navigator in our Uber10 2009 list, and today, the company has launched the on screen user interface to go with it. From the screen shots that I received, the application looks pretty promising, offering a visual gallery of all the shows available across multiple sites categorized by genre, an on screen keyboard to search by name, and a one-stop screen to access the major TV channels, the online video and music providers and the most popular websites such as Amazon or Facebook.

We selected the Glide Navigator for its sleek and elegant design and the need that media center users have for efficient remote controls that look good in the living room. The new user interface gets the same design quality and fits perfectly the device design. Check out the photo gallery to see the user interface and the device pictures. Features from the manufacturer are available in the complete commentary, along with the GlideTV competitive comparison chart (provided by the company).

Among the other specifications and features available on the Giada Cube N7DT are an Intel Atom D510 1.66GHz, NVIDIA’s next generation Ion chipset, a maximum of 2GB RAM, a 2.5″ hard drive bay, a DVD burner, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, LAN support, HDMI, DVI and SPDIF out as well as a TV tuner. No notion on pricing or availability though.

AVerTV answer’s Hauppauge offering with their USB HD PVR that features S-video, composite and a set of component video inputs to help you stay connected to your new HDTV from your computer. that is more or less the nearest you can get to HD quality with HDCP shielding HDMI video stream. Thanks to the integrated H.264 encoder, you are able to free up your CPU from unnecessary processing moment which would normally require at least a quad-core to transcode the HD stream in real-time. AVerMedia aims to stand differently from the rest by throwing in a HDMI output. Unfortunately, there is still no native Windows 7 Media Center support at day of publishing, but AVerMedia compensates for that with a copy of Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre equipped with scheduling features. Expect the AVerMedia USB HD PVR that March for $199.99.

A rather sensitive update number, don’t you think? Still, the XBMC is now in its 9.11 iteration, and that killer open source, cross platform media center is not only easy on the eyes, it is user friendly as well regardless of whether you’re running on a Windows, Mac or Linux based machine. The new look has been dubbed Confluence, where it will include the XBMC’s previous default skin alongside other popular skins for impressive results.

Asus and NVIDIA have just announced that several new models of the award-winning Asus Eee line are shipping with NVIDIA’s Ion chipset (the same one used in the Macbook Pro). The new products include:

Eee PC 1201N: Ion + dual-core CPU (Atom) netbook

EeeTop PC EB1012: All-in-one 20″ with touch screen and DVD

EeeBox PC EB 1012: Nettop that is HD video capable

EeeBox PC EB1501: A more energetic box with 4GB of memory and Windows 7 Home Premium

AT3N7A-I: A mini-ITX motherboard for home theater PCs

With the upcoming Flash 10.1 (final release), Ion will be extremely potent, not only for hardware-accelerated DVD or Blu-Ray playback (it has been since day 1), but plus for playing fullscreen Flash videos from sites like Hulu or YouTube, which are quickly becoming critical to a Media Center experience. that is a major design-win for NVIDIA.
