TomTom has announced two new GPS devices, the XL 350 and the XXL 550. Both these devices headed for the US are based on models from Europe that use the XL IQ routes and will offer the simplified menu system that is available on TomTom EASE devices. The XL 350 offers a 4.3-inch display and will set you back $169.95. The XXL 550 is listed as offering a 4.3-inch display as well, but there could be a mistake there, as the XXL models generally come with 5-inch displays. The XXL 550 will be going for $199.95. Both devices will offer lifetime maps and optional lifetime traffic updates whether you decide to shell out some additional money.

Garmin has announced that they will be rolling out a trio of marine GPS handheld devices known as the Garmin GPSMAP 78, GPSMAP 78s and GPSMAP 78sc. that remodeled series are able to run for up to 20 hours on just a pair of AA batteries, and will feature the HotFix GPS receiver from SiRF to help you get around. Shared specifications include a 2.6? color TFT display, IPX 7 waterproof certification, 1.7GB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot are plus standard. The GPSMAP 78 is going for $350 being the base model, while the $450 GPSMAP 78s comes with a barometric altimeter, tilt compensated 3-axis electronic compass and wireless unit-to-unit transfer. Last but not least is the $550 GPSMAP 78sc which has all that and pre-loaded maps. Meant for folks who spend plenty of instance in the waters though.

Good news for folks who are running a Motorola Milestone on TELUS. You’re now able to get hold of the Android 2.1 update, and you don’t even need to be in Hong Kong. The slight downside is that you won’t be able to get an over-the-air (OTA) upgrade like Verizon’s Motorola Droid, but you are able to download it directly from Motorola’s website. Improvements include the ability to add more home screens, more widgets, animated wallpapers, updated Google Maps with pinch-to-zoom and a few others. As usual, remember to backup your files and settings before attempting an upgrade.

The search engine giant has updated Google Maps for mobile to offer voice search for your Windows Mobile and Symbian S60 smartphones. So instead of having to fiddle with your keypad, you can just hit a button and state your destination to the phone. You’ll even be able to ask it for a specific address, retail outlet, or even a type of place such as a coffee shop. Not too poor, eh?

Getting promotional items from QR barcodes or SMS messages isn’t a new concept, but Apple is looking to take it one step further with its iTunes Concert Ticket+ patent. In that patent, tickets to the concert you desire can be sold through iTunes, and the ticket stored on your iPhone, ready to be presented when entering the venue. To invent your life easier, Maps, venue info and all the other mumbo jumbo will be included in the app. whether such a patent were to be turned into a real product, would Apple start sell all kinds of tickets, and take a slice of profit from each sale?

Soldiers in the future should be getting more and more tech to carry around, and HP is working on some rather cool display technologies to help them. What HP is working on is a prototype of a solar-powered lightweight computer display that is flexible abundant to be wrapped around a soldier’s wrist. The display is only 200 microns thick, and can show useful info such as maps or directions and will be powered by solar cells. Prototypes will be offered to the military early next year, which should be something to look forward too. Said display technology utilizes the popular E-Ink display technology. So it looks like soldiers of the future will all sport a futuristic version of a Dick Tracy watch, eh?
