If you have a visual disability, you generally won’t be reading maps, but with the DROP GPS system concept, you might be able to get in on all the GPS fun that’s going around nowadays. What that device will do is that it can use 3D dots to allow the blind to “see” the maps. It functions more or less like Braille, but it will be interesting to see how feasible such a concept would be. After all, reading a book and navigating a map are two different things. Of course, we’d be more than happy to see such a device in the market, not to mention review it. Should it be turned into a real product?

If you happen to own either the Nokia E71 or E66, soon after you will be pleased to know that the Finnish cellphone manufacturer has made available free navigation with Ovi Maps to both smartphones, after first appearing on the Nokia E72, Nokia N97 mini and X6 since January that year. that new version will require you to point your Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 to download the new Ovi Maps application to your computer from nokia.com/maps, where the application will be installed via Ovi Suite on your smartphone, and you can get around after that via Ovi Maps. While it won’t beat a committed GPS unit, it is still better than walking around with an undecipherable map, eh?

Flip phone designs might not be the most fashionable at the moment, but Motorola has filed for a patent application that just might help flip phones get back on the map. The patent calls for a design where the phone can present two and three dimensional images. The main display of the phone looks to be some style of a transparent display, and the keypad is obviously a virtual one. When the flip phone is closed, the image viewed through the cover of the phone will look like it’s in 3D. Yeah it does sound a little hocus pocus at the moment, but we’re certain the big M can work it out. whether you’re a serious 3D fan, you can check out the full patent filing.

Google Maps for mobile 4.1 is finally available, where its improvements include sorting through search results in an easier manner, while seeing Maps info in a more simplified way. Tabs have been removed, letting you see all the info you require on a individual page, while tapping new buttons enables you to view the place on the map, get directions, signal it, or see it with Street View. Latitude appears as a widget now, while you get Maps live wallpaper to further enhance your mobile traveling experience. You can look for “Google Maps” in Android Market from Android 1.6+ phones, and that update is available in all countries and languages where Maps is currently available. For those who have given it a go, how do you find it?

The Motonav N765t (N700 Series) has a very wide 5.1″ display. that is so wide that Motorola calls it “cinematic”. Having such a screen allows Motorola to display additional knowledge, while leaving the map visible at all times (you’re trying to get somewhere after all). The display surface has a non-glossy treatment that helps in direct sunlight.

Apart from that, it can plus project the map on a surface for you to orient yourself.
