Going green is the mantra at many companies for quite some instance now, and Lexon is no exception, having announced a new range of sustainably powered gadgets that are constructed from bamboo and maize bio-plastics. Among these everyday useful items include a calculator, an alarm clock or a FM radio - stuff that you can find in a decent cellphone, although that one takes a more individual, eco-friendly route. The alarm clock itself harnesses solar energy to keep it going, while the radio features a fold-out crank that requires some turning to obtain its juice. Just keep these out of reach of pandas with an appetite and you’re good to go.

[CES 2010] Now that isn't a gizmo, but it is an app that runs on compatible mobile devices (which are the iPhone and Android-powered handsets) which allows you to enter a name, cellphone number or e mail address and it will pull out results from its virtual magician's hat concerning the person you're about to go on a period with, as to whether he is a winner or a creep. "Look up before you hook up" is the mantra here for Datecheck, as nervous parties are able to check out various criteria like Sleaze Detector, Compatibility, the almighty $$$, Interests and Living Situation before giving a nod to that blind period. Expect a BlackBerry version to roll out soon, although dates using BlackBerrys might have a higher chance of owning a stiff upper lip.

Boffins are finding a way to use piezoelectrics on vehicles in order to convert kinetic energy into electricity, and that could mean piezoelectric devices being mounted on the roof or tail of a car or on an airplane fuselage, where the vibration within a flow would produce an output voltage. While all the juice generated is nary sufficient to match the potential of combustion engines or even come close to it, it could be used to ability other systems such as tiny electronic devices and control panels. Could energy scavenging be the new mantra?

Playstation Network to get fee-based subscription

In what would most probably be an unpopular move, Sony looks set to introduce a fee-based subscription for the Playstation Network sometime in 2010 or the year after that. It isn't meant to replace the free Playstation Network access but complement it instead, where they reiterate the mantra that money gets you places - in that case, perhaps an increased download speed or more detailed profile online among other exclusive benefits. What do you think of that development?
