While there aren’t any official details at the moment it seems that Microsoft is busy working on a project that could bring the core of its desktop OS to smartphones. whether that does happen, we’ll see the Windows NT core possibly replace the Windows CE core used in Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7 and the Zune HD. Murmurs of a graphics layer known as Experiment 19 will apparently be the magic to scale the experience down to a size that’s suitable for handheld devices. The team involved in that project is apparently called the Menlo team. It’ll be interesting to see how that affects Windows Mobile devices in the future, as Windows programs currently support different processor architectures and have different frameworks for programs. Looks like it’s something worth keeping an eye on.

Gizmodo reported today that the Microsoft Courier Tablet project has been canceled. The report must have been particularly bitter for Gizmodo, as the blog was first to uncover the project and referred to it many times as one that would ship Real Soon Now.

whether Gizmodo wants to see why Microsoft canceled Courier, they should read my September 23 column, "Why Microsoft's 'Courier' Tablet Will Never Exist."

Even now, Gizmodo seems betrayed and confused by the move, saying that Courier was "compelling," "innovative," and that they "loved" the interface.

The reason Gizmodo loved the "product" so much is that it was a fantasy product, not a real one. It's easy to conjure up magic when you don't have to build something.

that is one of the long-standing problems I have with a lot of tech coverage by both blogs and the mainstream media — they're indifferent to the distinction within an actual, real, shippable product — say, the Apple iPad — and the mere view for a product conjured up with Hollywood special effects — say, the Microsoft Courier.

I even wrote a column about that phenomenon (centered on the hype that followed Gizmodo's Courier coverage) called "Dispatch From Gadget Fantasy land." It makes delightful reading now that it appears the Courier will never exist.

adequate! Let's all shout blogs and news organizations on reporting vague ideas as imminent products that will soon be on the market. It's just sloppy reporting.

A couple of gaming nerds managed to take a standard VW Scirocco and weaved some engineering magic into it, transforming it into a virtual simulator. All major controls in the car such as the steering wheel, gas and brake pedals, and gear stick have been attached to the in-game controls for that added touch of realism. Why the VW Scirocco, you ask? Well, all the controls are handled electronically instead of mechanically, making the transition a whole lot easier without causing any damage to the car. To top it off, a projector is mounted into the car and is complemented by an improved speaker system. Best of all is, you won’t need to fork out a individual cent for gas.

Updating your applications on Google’s Android is never a fun affair, and whether you have multiple applications to update, you might feel like tearing your hair out, as you need to update each application individually. Now it seems that following the leak that the HTC Magic was caught running Android 2.2, it seems that there might be a possibility that Android 2.2 might offer self-moving application updates, as per the screenshot above. Of course, there isn’t any way to verify that at the moment, but whether it does turn out to be real, it would be a great improvement for Android users, wouldn’t you think?

Do you get motion sickness when you try and watch videos on your media player while on the bus/car? Well, HTC might have a solution for that, and perhaps it’ll even show up on upcoming devices. The Taiwanese company has filed a patent application that will see an accelerometer or other types of motion sensors used to detect unintended movements on the device while playing video. When detected, the device will move the image displayed in the opposite direction, effectively ensuring that the image always appears stable in space. Of course, whether you’re not used to it, you’ll probably end up throwing up, but hopefully HTC will be able to work its magic on that technology, and we’ll be watching vibration free videos in the future.

Sharp will be announcing the world’s first 3D/2D switchable touchscreen display that doesn’t require 3D glasses to enjoy the 3D effect that we’ve all the longing for. Apparently that is the same kind of 3D display that the upcoming Nintendo 3DS will feature. The magic behind the display is the parallax barrier system and taking advantage of advances made in CG-Silicon technology, the LCD is able to achieve better image quality and brightness. The 3D display should sport a 3.4-inch size with a 480 x 854 resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio, and 500cd/m2 brightness in 2D mode. Whatever magic Sharp is planning to work on its display technology, as faraway as it gives us a great 3D experience at an consumer-friendly price, there shouldn’t be any complaints.

Don’t you just hate warm beer? whether you want to keep your beer chilled all the moment, the ChemKeg Dominator will certainly be able to offer that, thanks to the magic of science. that uses a high quality Pope Scientific bench top dewar flask, a vacuum thermos commonly used to hold liquid nitrogen, and thus can keep 4.3 liters of beer icy cold until you finish the last drop. It additionally works to keep beverages hot, and whether you need to pull and all nighter, that might actually be your best friend, assuming that you filled it with piping hot coffee instead of icy cold beer.
