Google might be getting more and more interested in the world of hardware, with news from The New York Times concerning Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt who recently paraded a Google-made tablet at a party, claiming that the company is currently looking into a covert prototype that will play nice with the delivery of books, magazines and other subject matter. Do you think that that points toward a Google tablet, to follow in the footsteps of the Google Nexus One? Guess tablets are here to stay, partly due to the Apple iPad’s seemingly phenomenal start.

Barnes & Noble has made it known that they will be releasing their version of the eReader app for the Apple iPad sometime near the device’s launch, but apart from that, they have remained mum on the other details. We do know that the app will be free though, as it offers you access to all of the books, magazines and newspapers available in Barnes & Noble’s eBookstore. Does that mean we could cross our fingers for a Kindle app as well?

Rewind your memories and see whether you remember CueCat – a bar cipher reader that supposedly connects magazine readers with digital material. Never heard of it? That’s OK – Microsoft ought to do a better job promoting its upcoming Microsoft Tag, which could very well be CueCat reincarnated (a cat has nine lives after all, doesn’t it?). Microsoft Tag keeps up with the times, however, by doing away with the need for a tag, but it does require your cellphone to have a camera in order to scan a specific bar cipher, allowing digital composition to seem on the phone itself after doing so. Such tags can be placed in magazines, newspapers, business cards, products as well as large outdoor signs, making it the hyperlink in the physical realm. No notion on how Microsoft will monetize Tag, but it will remain free at the moment until they figure something out. For more context, check out the YouTube video above.

Are you the type who loves cutting out snippets of news from the papers or interesting articles from magazines? Why not take the more convenient route by digitizing that experience with the SkyPix Handheld Scanner? Capable of capturing full color 600 dpi resolution images onto a microSD memory card immediately, it helps save you the inconvenience of transferring notes via a USB port. What are some of the uses you can think of for your lifestyle where that $119.95 device is concerned? Mom might need one that Christmas to scan all those recipes she chances across from instance to day.

Interead’s COOL-ER was mighty fine an e-reader, although the lack of Wi-Fi connectivity made it pretty nuch a damper. Great news though – Interead has taken note of your woes, and will be rolling out a COOL-ER 3G e-reader next year which boasts Wi-Fi connectivity alongside a package with AT&T for bandwidth and NewspaperDirect for access to by 1,300 newspapers and magazines. Chances are that model will be out sometime in the middle of next year, and hopefully other improvements will be made to keep up with the times when summer 2010 rolls around.
