Thunderbird Lanikai Beta 1 Released
March 12, 2010

Mozilla has officially launched the first beta of Thunderbird 3 today, codenamed Lanikai. It’s available for Windows, Mac and Linux, so compatibility shouldn’t be much of an issue. The goal of that release is to smooth out the problems created by upgrading the Gecko engine that powers the program, and that is the first semi-stable release of Mozilla’s mail client to use Gecko 1.9.2. The final version of Thunderbird 3.1 is expected to be available sometime in June, though the moment hasn’t been set in stone yet, so there is still a possibility the release term to be changed.

ARM to mobilize 50 tablets that year
March 10, 2010

Roy Chen, ARM's worldwide mobile computing ODM manager, predicted that the company will be powering at least 50 tablets that will be launched sometime that year, with the first slew hitting us in the second quarter followed by a tsunami of tablets in the third. What we are more interested in would be the operating system of choice - will these ARM-powered tablets run on Android, Linux, or Windows?

HTC Touch Pro2 Runs Ubuntu Linux
March 9, 2010

This is probably another development that Microsoft won’t be too happy about, but it’s not like they can stop you from tinkering with your phone, right? Now, after the HTC Touch HD has been hacked to run Android, we’ve got wind of a HTC Touch Pro2 running Ubuntu Linux 8.04. Of course, the OS is really meant for laptops and desktops, but again, nobody can stop you from having some fun, right? You’re free to give it a try by loading the files onto the memory card, and running haret.exe, though we’d strongly propose you backup your files and settings before giving that a tryout drive. In case you need more info on how cool that is, check out the video after the jump.

Dr. Yi ebook reader
March 9, 2010

The Dr. Yi ebook reader could very well change the way ebooks are manufactured, thanks to its high-resolution electronic paper. that is a genuine technological revolution that offers a crisp black-and-white display, making it look as though you were reading on printed paper itself. After all, it is capable of reflecting light similar to the way an ordinary paper does without the need for any backlighting, doing away with the glare which are normally associated with other electronic displays. that $315 device will run on a Linux operating system, an ARM9 200MHz processor as well as 22 hours of battery life. No view on its subject matter delivery system though.

Gigabyte EB10 in the works
March 4, 2010
Gigabyte doesn't only form motherboards, but are currently working on a new e-book reader known as the EB10, where it comes with a 6" e-ink display at 800 x 600 resolution with a Samsung 667MHz processor powering it. For the operating system, it looks as though Android is being lined up, but there is plus the possibility of Linux or Win CE 6.0 knocking on the door as well. Basically, Gigabyte hopes to form the EB10 as open as possible, allowing users to install just about any software they like on the EB10 as faraway as it has adequate processing firepower to follow through.

Linpus Linux Lite updated
March 4, 2010

Linpus Linux Lite for netbooks has been updated, where it sports an overhauled user interface to keep up with the times. There is the presence of tabs on the right side of the display, letting you add icons and shortcuts to favorite programs in various categories. While there is the choice for unlimited tab creation, you probably would want to control yourself since it will affect your netbook's performance with too many tabs. Guess Windows XP has won the netbook operating system war - perhaps Linpus might want to regroup for an assault on the iPad?
