Amazing stuff – the multiplayer beta of Halo: Reach actually managed to attract more players in one day than the Halo 3 beta did during its entire run, which is by a million gamers. Assuming we extrapolate that data to the launch of Halo: Reach, you can be certain that Microsoft has a winner on their hands that day round, but we will just have to patiently wait until September for the game to be released.

The upcoming Mac OS X 10.6.4 update is touted to fix a wide range of issues (like any other good update should!), where it will fix dropped connections with Cisco VPN, the pairing of Apple remotes with Macs, graphics anomalies that crop up whenever one edits images in iPhoto’s full-screen mode and video playback in the DVD Player. Apart from that, we additionally have word that additional cipher corrections will target glitches with Parental Controls, erratic USB keyboard behaviors, 3D animations and problems concerning the launch of Adobe CS3 applications including Photoshop and Illustrator.

It seems that the mysterious BlackBerry Cobalt tablet was originally planned to operate with Android as its operating system of choice, but RIM at the last minute had a change of heart instead, deciding to rely on their own operating system which obviously delayed the launch of the device since they will need to work on adapting the software for such a new mold factor. We have word that Quanta will be the manufacturing partner for the entire device that will run on Marvell’s Armada processor. Do you think that that was a wise choice by RIM’s part, or should they have relied on the Android OS to give the tablet a fighting chance considering the growing popularity of Android in the market?

Solid-state drives are becoming more and more popular nowadays, and Intel apparently has some big plans for SSDs that holiday season. Come the fourth quarter Intel is planning to introduce drives that offer capacities larger than what is currently offered. The chip giant is busy working on the more efficient 25nm MLC NAND flash memory, which can offer capacities such as 160GB, 300GB and 600GB, which should more or less replace the company’s existing 34nm X25-M range. Intel should also be coming up with a high capacity 1.8-inch version that is capable of hitting the 300GB mark as well. Are you looking forward to the day where laptop hard drives will be completely replaced by SSDs?

While Clearwire wasn’t very generous with technical details, it has confirmed, via its first quarter earnings report that it is planning to churn out two WiMAX phones made by Samsung and HTC. Both phones are expected to be available by the end of 2010, so we more or less only have another half a year to go at most. Without offering any model numbers, the Samsung was described as an Android-powered 3G/4G/Wi-Fi device that would be optimized for heavy video and video communication use, while the HTC would be a 3G/4G/Wi-Fi enabled phone. The lack of an OS mentioned along with the HTC device has led to speculation that it might be powered by the upcoming Windows Phone 7, which would be an interesting device, as we are looking forward to seeing devices powered by Windows Phone 7.

We gave you an early peek at the upcoming Microsoft Kin One and Kin Two phones, and we told you that they were coming on Verizon’s network that month. Well, the instance has come and we have the details about the launch, the specifications and most importantly, the pricing.

Both Kin phones will launch in Verizon’s stores on May 13th for a price of $49.99 and $99.99, after a mail-in rebate and only when purchased with a 2-year contract. Verizon says that “Customers will receive the rebate in the design of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted ” (Verizon).

The details plan data is even more critical: with $39.99 for the voice, and $29.99 for the info, that’s a minimum of $70 that will be charged monthly, which is precisely what smartphone users pay… except that Microsoft Kin does not supply a smartphone experience. So, by two years, we are talking about a $1680 + phone + taxes + fees cost. Honestly, I was expecting the starting price to be lower.

For certain, the device has been selling much better than skeptics had predicted and overall, it is a very interesting device (read our iPad review), but it additionally arrives in a much different world than the one in which the original iPhone was born: there are now tens of thousands of apps, and the eco-system is much bigger than it used to be next. Of course, selling that many iPad is very impressive, and looking at how lucrative the black market is (I saw a lot of iPads selling for about 2x the price in Hong Kong) I can predict that the universal launch is likely to be a success as well.
