Solid-state drives are becoming more and more popular nowadays, and Intel apparently has some big plans for SSDs that holiday season. Come the fourth quarter Intel is planning to introduce drives that offer capacities larger than what is currently offered. The chip giant is busy working on the more efficient 25nm MLC NAND flash memory, which can offer capacities such as 160GB, 300GB and 600GB, which should more or less replace the company’s existing 34nm X25-M range. Intel should also be coming up with a high capacity 1.8-inch version that is capable of hitting the 300GB mark as well. Are you looking forward to the day where laptop hard drives will be completely replaced by SSDs?

Stereoscopic 3D is surely picking up the pace with the amount of 3D technology being introduced that year to the mass consumer market, and we have whiff of the Nintendo 3DS being released that October in the UK, which is a faraway way off from the currently anticipated March 2011 rollout period. What do you think – will an October release see Nintendo’s coffers swell up due to the upcoming holiday season, or will gamers remain on the sidelines and be cautious with there their dollars are going?

Interesting rumor – it seems that Barnes & Noble is working on expanding its line of Nook readers as soon as the next few weeks, with a stripped-back Nook touted to offer Wi-Fi only being in the pipeline with a $199 price point, while that supposedly new Nook and the regular model will plus benefit from an interim firmware update in the mold of version 1.4 which will see the addition of a full web browser. Apart from that, another Nook known as Project Encore is most likely to roll out before the year is by, and whether so, hopefully before the holiday season in order to form as many sales as possible thereupon. How do you see all that competition heating up the ebook reader scene? Is it favorable to consumers, or just an ego trip for companies?

[CES 2010] that is a hidden gem from the floors of CES, with Identity of Korea unveiling their SoIP S1 device. Currently in a prototype mold factor, what you see here is meant to run on the Android operating system with it sitting squarely in your living room. Boasting a capability of supporting DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance), it will be able to play nice with compatible consumer electronic devices from 240 members within DLNA which ought to construct it future-proof for a fair number of years. The display itself is touchscreen sensitive, and there is a handset placed in the cradle that can be picked up whenever you want to carry out a VoIP conversation, although you might most probably consider using the integrated webcam to carry out a video signal instead. It remains connected to the Net via a Wi-Fi router, and the touchscreen display will show off a variety of widgets and can even double up as a digital photo frame. The prototype on display is lost a credit card reader which will be implemented in the final version, where you will next be able to form online transactions with your credit card using nothing but a simple swipe. [CES 2010] Identity seems pretty bent on the Android view, which is a good thing since we would like to see more and more hardware manufacturers adopt Android to see what they can come up with for the mass market. The prototype Media CPE C1 was on display, where it can connect to your home network connection via WiMAX or Wi-Fi, and it doubles up as a digital photo frame with the added capability of offering media playback and support of Android widgets. Needless to say, it is equipped with a touchscreen display for you to navigate. No concept on when it will roll out, but we hope to see it hit the market before that year’s holiday season is by for a pocket-friendly price.

Another day, another piece of news on an e-book reader, with Paradigm Shift making the headlines that duration round. Their color e-book reader is ready for launch at CES 2010 which is happening in slightly more than a week’s day, but we would certainly preferred to have seen that hit the market in moment for the mad holiday season. Paradigm Shift’s yet unnamed offering will come in 5″ and 7″ screen sizes, where you get integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, Windows CE, 2GB RAM and a price point of $150 for the 5″ model. Expect it to hit the market sometime in February, although we doubt that it will have as much success as the Kindle from Amazon.

Word on the street has it that Google’s Chrome OS netbook’s specifications have been leaked out, and most citizens who have taken a look at it are very, very happy. After all, wouldn’t you plus be a happy camper with an NVIDIA Tegra chipset running alongside an ARM processor? The rumor plus states that that netbook will come with a 10.1″ multi-touch HD-capable display, a 64GB SSD, 2GB RAM, and other staples including Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth connectivity alongside a webcam. Not only will it run on Chrome OS, you will plus get a suite of pre-installed Google Apps. Best of all is, that netbook is slated for a 2010 holiday season release, retailing for less than three Benjamins at a subsidized price. Neat! that is one rumor we hope to see come true!

The folks at the FCC are currently playing with the Toshiba NB300, where that next generation Toshiba netbook will not only boast integrated 3G wireless connectivity but GPS navigation capabilities as well. Guess that is best used with a co-pilot in the car, as we doubt there is a large adequate mount on your dashboard that can handle the NB300 while you drive without obstructing your view of the road. Too poor the Toshiba NB300 won’t assemble it out in duration for the holiday season, but better late than never, eh? Features and specifications of the netbook include a 10.1″ display, a Qualcomm Gobi2000 module, compatibility with GPS, EVDO, WCDM/HSPA, CDMA200 and EDGE services and in all probability a next-generation Intel Atom Pineview chip considering its release period.
