AT&T Ditches Google For Yahoo On Its Motorola Backflip

AT&T Ditches Google For Yahoo On Its Motorola Backflip

No matter how you phrase it, you’ve really got to appreciate the irony of the whole situation. that is probably one of the downsides of having an open OS, as the Motorola Backflip offered by AT&T will have Yahoo Search plastered all by the phone. The home screen widget has been replaced by a Yahoo version, and nearly any search you perform via the phone will be using Yahoo to churn out the results, and considering that Google is the one who came up with the Android OS that powers that phone, it certainly does seem a little weird. Of course, AT&T hasn’t done anything wrong here, particularly since the OS is open, and the carrier is free to customize it, though that certainly isn’t going to stop users from having a little laugh at the irony of the whole situation, right? Do you have any complaints about that move, or will any search engine do the trick for you?

SciPhone WG3 clones the G1

SciPhone WG3 clones the G1

While the T-Mobile G1 is extremely old hat by now, that hasn't stopped those cloners from China from coming up with the SciPhone WG3 which is a clone of the G1. Specifications-wise, that is a pretty impressive handset, boasting a 3.2" touchscreen display, Wi-Fi connectivity, dual cameras (presumably one is meant for video calls), dual SIM carriage and TV support. Needless to say, the WG3 will additionally double up as a portable media player as all decent smartphones should these days, but there is no mention of its operating system which is rather strange. It does not come with a QWERTY keyboard as with the G1 though, so those who love a physical keyboard when composing messages might want to give that a miss.

Next Edition Of Android To Be Called Gingerbread

While Froyo hasn’t been released to the general public yet, info that the next version of Google’s Android after Froyo will be dubbed Gingerbread has surfaced. The update came from Brian Swetland, Android’s Kernel guru, and an excerpt from his post reads:

This week we’re finalizing our move to 2.6.32 for the Android “Froyo” release, and we’ll likely be on .33 or .34 for “Gingerbread”.

Whatever name Google decides to use for it’s Android OS versions, we certainly hope that the final product will be tasty (pun intended).

Apple Mac Pro To Get 6-Core Intel i7 Processors?

Apple Mac Pro To Get 6-Core Intel i7 Processors?

Apple’s Mac Pro hasn’t been updated since way back in September 2009 when the Quad-Core model received support for 16GB of RAM. Now reports are indicating that the Core i7-980X and Core i7-970 processors might be arriving that month. whether you still remember, Apple was the first to use the Nehalem Xeon, thanks to an exclusivity deal with Intel, and whether history is going to repeat itself, we might see Apple having exclusivity with Intel’s latest processors for a while. These processors will be the first dual-socket, six-core processor from Intel. When you take into consideration that the processor will sport 6 cores and 12 threads, a dual-processor configuration will mean the i7-980X Mac Pro will sport 12 physical cores and 24 logical cores with a top frequency of 3.33GHz. whether that’s the case, you might want to hold off purchasing a new PC/Mac for the moment.

Latest Zune Player Comes Language Localized

Latest Zune Player Comes Language Localized

It seems like there is more than one surprise in the latest Zune software update. Apparently the latest version is additionally language localized. Thus far, Microsoft hasn’t mentioned any plans to sell its Zune hardware outside the US, and the Zune player software isn’t available on the German Zune.net website either, but it seems that once you install the latest Zune player on a non-English PC, all the dialogs automatically change to a different language (German in that case). While it isn’t entirely clear why Microsoft did that just yet, a smart bet would be that it’s intending to expand the Zune HD hardware to other countries, or perhaps that it might be rolling out a Zune service launch in various universal markets. The rumors have often indicated that Windows Mobile 7 would have Zune features built-in, so that would certainly justify the need for the Zune player to be available in various languages. Hopefully Microsoft will shed more light on that at next month’s Mobile World Congress, and whether they do, it’s certainly going to be an event that we’re all looking forward to.

Nokia X6 16GB To Be Available In Pink

Nokia X6 16GB To Be Available In Pink

Nokia’s X6 16GB hasn’t been officially announced just yet, but reports are already stating that the device will be available multiple color versions that aren’t available on the 32GB variant. It seems the 16GB variant will be available in black, pink on white, and blue on white. Since it sports a lower storage space, its price tag should be shaved by a good €100 ($141), putting the estimated price at €350 ($495). Aside from that, the phone will most likely not include Nokia’s Comes With Music (CWM) service, which is included by default on the 32GB edition. In terms of specs, the 16GB version should be fairly similar to the 32GB version, sporting a 360 x 640 pixel capacitive touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, GPS, TV out, 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. that phone will most likely be launched in the next few months, and possibly in date for Valentine’s Day.
