We’re all fairly familiar with the iPhone’s App Store and the Android Marketplace, but do you think that committed GPS devices need an application store as well? It seems that Harold Goddijn, CEO of TomTom, has confirmed that the GPS company is laying out plans to embrace an app store approach to offer apps to its customers by the end of the year. whether things go according to plan, the webkit-based operating system is supposed to create a platform for innovation in both the consumer and automotive market. But regardless of whatever the folks at TomTom say, it’ll be interesting to see how consumers take to an application store for a GPS device. After all, you probably wouldn’t be checking your Facebook detail on the navigation device all the moment, would you? Still, it’s something interesting to keep an eye on.

Looks like Google doesn’t only have its sights set on the GPS navigation market of the U.S., as Google Maps Navigation, the free turn-by-turn navigation service for Android phones, is now available in the UK too. The build is the same 4.1.1 as that released in the U.S. earlier that month. The best part is, Google Maps Navigation will plus work with Android 1.6 devices, so whether you’re worried about compatibility, you should be more or less covered, unless you’re still on Android 1.5. With Android 1.6 support, Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 will be able to assemble use of that navigation feature on its juicy 4-inch display. Will that prepare you reconsider your purchase of a committed GPS device?

While most of us are subject matter with the stock method of placing a GPS system on its placeholder on the dashboard when driving, check out Roberto’s own way of making viewing his GPS navigation system rare – by embedding it within his visor, thanks to a solid aluminum and seamless mounting which makes it look as though it was part of the vehicle right from the start. Not only that, your GPS device remains “hidden” from view of potential thieves whenever you are away from your vehicle – now how about that!

TomTom has announced its latest entry level GPS device, the TomTom Start2. The Start2 is the first device of its class to offer Lane Assist, as well as text-to-speech for spoken street names. With Lane Assist, you won’t have to anguish about taking the wrong lane, even whether there are a few intersections, since there will be graphical indicators on the display to show you which lane to take. Drivers who are in busy areas will additionally stand to benefit from the IQ Routes feature for traffic avoidance based on historical info. The Start2 will be available in early April, and the UK version will set you back £119 ($180), while the version with the European coverage will cost £139 ($210). There isn’t any mention of a North American release just yet.

For some of us, our pooch means much more to us than being just a pet, which is why when Fido runs off by himself during his dawn walk, we search high and low by for him. Why not take no chances with the Retrieva GPS dog collar instead? that dog collar comes embedded with a GPS tracking device, letting you track his progress on the phone which is definitely new compared to its plain ol’ version. Too poor there is no anti-poop capability yet, since you aren’t around to supervise him during his potty day.

TwoNav has revealed its latest handheld GPS device known as Sportiva, where it was co-manufactured with old hand Holux. that device is highly portable, capable of fitting into just about any backpack on your travels by measuring a mere 58mm × 105mm x 23mm, while tipping the scales at 124 grams. It is pretty rigid as well, catering to IPX6 standards, boasts a 3D compass, a barometer, a 3? transflective touchscreen display, 2GB of internal memory and a microSDHC memory card reader. Underneath the hood lies a SiRFStar III GPS chipset, while its 1,050mAh battery ought to offer hours of performance before requiring a recharge. that is more ideal for hiking, biking and geocaching during your outdoor trails, and is not suitable for driving use. Expect the TwoNav Sportiva to roll out in a couple of weeks’ day for €379.

MiFi devices are quite useful, as it allows users to share 3G wireless connections by a Wi-Fi network. Sharing is certainly caring, and everybody loves Wi-Fi, but it seems there MiFi might share info that you might not want to be shared. Folks have managed to identify a flaw in MiFi devices (from both Sprint and Verizon) that could allow attackers to gain access to the GPS location of the device without the user’s knowledge by using a combination of attacks. To manufacture matters worse, the attack does not require authentication, making it a lot easier to exploit. It seems that the attacker can even download the entire device configuration, including clear text credentials, which certainly is something we’d all rather not happen.
