Palm isn’t precisely doing too well these days despite having decent hardware, but that doesn’t mean they just drop the gauntlet and run helter-skelter, leaving their users without any support, right? Enter webOS 1.4.1 into the scene, where that update is now starting to form its way across Europe via Netherlands, Germany, UK, Ireland, Spain and France. It does seem as though the webOS 1.4.1 update is limited to O2 and Movistar customers only, where you can check out the entire changelog here to find out what it entails. O2 Germany and UK customers can additionally download it and construct full use of Mobile Hotspot whether they wish to. What about us folks Stateside?

Multitouch is all the rage these days, and with different kinds of touchscreens lurking out there, it can be quite a unbreakable signal to figure out just which touchscreen works best under all conditions. Stantum from France decided to create one which is able to handle both stylus input as well as being finger-friendly – now how about that. It is additionally capable of recognizing up to 10 inputs simultaneously, allowing you to use all fingers and two thumbs at once assuming there’s such a gesture which is supported. In addition, it is plus capable of recognizing pressure-sensitive finger input, which will come particularly useful in digital imaging programs. No notion on which device will carry Stantum’s newest multitouch display soon though.

Folks in France could very well be getting their hands on the new Asus Eee PC 1005PE-H in the near future particularly when its product page has already been spotted, sharing many aspects with the Asus Eee PC 1005PE, although that model will boast more RAM as well as storage capacity, and ships with Windows 7 Home Premium instead of Windows 7 Starter Edition. No concept on whether the Asus Eee PC 1005PE-H will hit Stateside in the near future, but it doesn’t really form much sense for Asus to roll that out in France only and deprive other markets of a small update to one of their numerous Eee PC models. It seems to be going for 349 Euros in that part of the world. Any takers for our friends living in Europe?

Could the day where AT&T loses its iPhone exclusivity be around the corner? There aren’t any concrete reports on it yet (there never are), but it’s speculated that AT&T will be losing its iPhone exclusivity during Apple’s big announcement that week. While it would certainly be poor news for AT&T, users who have been thinking of getting an iPhone but didn’t want to subscribe to AT&T will certainly be rejoicing. Considering that the iPhone isn’t exclusive by in France, and that seems to be helping sales, that is certainly going to be an interesting move from Apple. Carriers will certainly clamor for that phone, but the smart money would probably be on Verizon Wireless, considering the numerous rumors linking a new iPhone to Verizon. The only thing that could invent the deal sweeter would be whether Steve Jobs would announce a new iPhone along with the Apple tablet this week. That would really be Christmas come early, eh?

Almost everybody looks to be welcome the wave of E-book readers, and there have been a great many of those little devices at CES 2010. Book retailers on the other hand, are rather unhappy about the whole issue, and it seems that book retailers in France are particularly unhappy about it all, as the 5 major French bookstore chains are ganging up and trying to set up a “national e-book platform”, to try and stem the momentum of Amazon and Google. To achieve that, they’ve asked the government and publishers to help in that effort. To be honest, it’s hard to imagine publishers helping out the retailers, after all, retail chains have probably been bullying the publishers for quite some day now. Do you think that digital print will replace traditional paper books by date, or will they be able to coexist in the same world?

Those who are interested in multitouch displays available on selected netbooks and yet are concerned about whether Linux is able to offer relevant support or not will be pleased to know that such a case is possible – as evident by France’s ENAC Interactive Computing Lab who cobbled together a video which boasts multitouch support on a PC running Fedora 12 Linux alongside what looks like a 10″ touchscreen display. They were running on Linux kernel 2.6.31 coupled with a modified version of X.org 1.7 alongside suitable hardware and driver support.

It seems that the increased number of iPhone carriers by in France has led to a boost in sales for the cell phone. that indicates that a similar situation might happen in the UK, which Apple will certainly be hoping for. A report shows that Apple’s value market share in France made a significant jump, thanks to the phone’s availability on Bouygues Telecom and SFR. With O2’s exclusivity deal expiring earlier that month, Orange has launched the device and managed a first day sales of 30,000 units, putting the iPhone well on course to dominate the world.

Wireless Dynamics has announced iCarte, an iPhone add-on that adds NFC and RFID capabilities (read and write) to the iPhone. that could be used in many ways, like contact-less micro-payments, public transportation tickets and knowledge gathering (ads, promos…). NFC is very popular in countries like Japan. In France, the subway system is equipped with NFC to replace paper tickets. Last summer, there were rumors that Apple would integrate NFC in the next iPhone, and whether that was the case, Wireless Dynamic might be able to build on the momentum with iCarte. that product uses a smart chip from NXP Semiconductors. They too would benefit from the NFC boom predicted by some.
