Many of you might already know that the 3.21 firmware update for Sony’s PlayStation 3 disables the OtherOS functionality from the console, which effectively means that you can’t install Linux on it anymore. While hackers have been busy enabling the feature back on the console, some consumers think it’s better to file a class action lawsuit against the company, as in the case of Anthony Venture who has done just that. The lawsuit covers all PS3 consoles purchased from November 17th 2006 to March 27th 2010. The lawsuit calls for compensatory damages, restitution, injunctive relief and legal fees to be paid by Sony, and a figure of $5 million has been mentioned. Do you think it’s within Sony’s rights to remove the OtherOS functionality from the PS3 via a firmware update?

Sony is preparing to roll out a spanking new firmware upgrade that June which will enable 3D capabilities on the PS3, albeit for titles on the PlayStation Network (PSN) only, as that does not apply to Blu-ray movies. Of course, folks who want 3D Blu-ray movies might look forward to a second firmware update later that year. Folks who pick up Sony’s HX803 will have free access to 4 remastered PSN Titles – Wipeout HD, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, PAIN and Stardust HD. Looks like the PS3 is doing its part in being future proof pretty well!

The hack can be done without having to crack open your PS3, and all you have to do is restore a custom generated PUP file. There is even a slim possibility that that hack might be able to get the “OtherOS” feature to work on the PS3 Slim, but you’ll have to cross your fingers and wait and see. There isn’t an actual release moment on that hack yet, but we’ll be keeping an eye on it. Check out a video demonstrating it.

Looks like the 3.21 firmware update for the Sony PS3 isn’t all peachy and rosy, since it not only removes the “install other OS” option, it plus includes locking valid owners out of their PSN explanation, with the console not loading a disc after the update. For the more extreme situation, some users have even complained about being unable to turn on the PS3 once the update is applied, while others saw their console freeze during the firmware update process. Sony has yet to reply to all these allegations and complains, so we hope that something will be done soonest possible whether they are legit.

It would be interesting to see whether gamers will adopt 3D gaming as fast as Sony would like them to, after all, doing so would mean selling even more TVs, right?

Alongside that addition to energize little ones to read more, Sony plus increased the potency of their compatibility with Media Go software, enabling users to view videos and listen to audio playlists created within Media Go.
