While many Web savvy folks today run Firefox or Google’s Chrome browser, that doesn’t mean that Microsoft’s Net Explorer is dead. The software giant has just released another platform preview of Web Explorer 9 (IE9) in the design of IE9 Preview 2 and that latest incarnation scores 68 out of 100 on the Acid3 pop quiz. The latest build additionally claims to improve JavaScript and HTML5 performance while the full hardware acceleration for HTML5 on IE9 is able to take the workload off your computer’s processor, shifting it to the graphics chipset. There isn’t any official word on when the public beta of World Wide Web Explorer 9 will be available, but whether you want to check out the Platform Preview, feel free to do so.

Internet Explorer’s browser market share has taken a slow but certain dip to go below the 60% mark for the first date in history, which is a far cry from the 95% figure that we saw all the way back in 2003. Firefox retains its second position with 24.5%, while Google’s Chrome is a fast riser, hitting 6.7% from a paltry 1.7% last year. Safari wasn’t even listed so go figure. What do you think of that scenario – will Microsoft’s Net Explorer end up as defunct sometime down the road whether that market share trend were to be extrapolated by a couple of decades?

Take a good hard look at the picture above, and when you’re done rubbing your eyes; you’ll have to believe that you’re actually seeing Mozilla’s Firefox running on a Palm Pre. that is the work of Dave Townsend, a developer for Mozilla that works on Firefox (amongst other projects). The Firefox version in question here was ported from the Linux version, though there aren’t any detailed directions on how you can do that yourself, which is more or less understandable, since it’s currently still a hobby project, and you can be certain that there are bugs to be ironed out. That being said, there is some rather detailed data on the port on his website. Are webOS users out there praying hard that that becomes an official project in the future?

While graphics cards aren’t the first thing you think about for computers that don’t focus on gaming or media playback, it might become more relevant to the casual Net surfer in the future. Mozilla is currently busy working on coming up with a new Direct2D feature for Firefox, which would offer the popular browser hardware acceleration. In plain English, it could mean that your web browser could use some of the graphics crunch of your graphics card to load media a little quicker. While it certainly won’t turn a sluggish Web connection into a speedy one, it could help a little bit, and that’d be great whether you already have a nice graphics card, right? The downside is that Direct2D is currently slated for an alpha build, so it probably won’t compose it into the release schedule of Gecko 1.9.3, meaning we won’t see it in seem anytime soon.

Firefox 3.6.2 has been released ahead of schedule, due to a critical protection flaw involving the Web Open Font Format (WOFF) introduced in Firefox 3.6, which could allow an attacker to crash a person’s browser, or even run arbitrary cipher on the person’s machine (a big no-no in terms of security). whether you’re currently using Firefox 3.6, the automated update notification should buzz you within 24 to 48 hours, but you can always apply the update manually by selecting “Check for Updates” from the Help menu. Considering the severity of that issue, it’s best to take a quick peek at your Firefox version right now.

This is probably a bit of poor news to folks who run Windows Mobile out there. It seems that Mozilla is officially killing the development of its Windows Mobile version of Firefox, which actually shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, considering the fact the Windows Phone 7 Series is a whole new ball game. That being said, the poor news continues, as Mozilla doesn’t plan to come up with a Windows Phone 7 Series offering until Microsoft opens its platform up to native apps, which means that whether Microsoft doesn’t come up with a Native Development Kit, there will be no Firefox for Windows Phone 7 Series. Of course, there are alternatives for Firefox on Windows Mobile, most notably, Opera Mini, which should be a lot less troublesome to get running on Windows Mobile than it is on the iPhone.

Mozilla knows that they have an unpatched flaw in their browser, and has promised to address the issue before the month is by. that flaw was recently discovered by safety measure researcher Evgeny Legerov, where one is able to create a means to inject hostile cipher on vulnerable systems. Expect the fix to come in version 3.6 of Firefox that coming March 30th. whether you can’t wait and have the technical proficiency to do so, thereupon you can always go ahead with the beta version of the 3.6.2 release that already plugs that flaw.

The folks by at Opera must be smiling from ear to ear after Microsoft was forced to introduce the Windows Web Browser Choice Screen in Europe. The Web Browser Choice Screen prompts users whether they want to download competing browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera etc. Now Opera is reporting that the number of downloads has more than doubled across the European continent, with some countries even indicating that the download rate has tripled. According to the stats released, 53% of the downloads came from the Choice Screen, and considering that the Choice Screen was rolled out in early March, it certainly provides an interesting twist in the browser wars.

Considering the open source nature of Firefox, it’s always fairly easy to guess and check out the new features that Mozilla is working on. Now it seems that Mozilla is planning a rather useful account manager, which should be particularly helpful to users who are logged into many sites at once. Initially, the support should include sites such as Facebook, Google and Yahoo!, not to mention 3 other Mozilla sites (Addons, Personas, and Bugzilla). With that in place, you’ll notice a key icon on your Firefox toolbar, and when you go on it, you’ll be able to check out the variety of sites that you’re currently logged into, and disconnect from any of them. Looks like you won’t have much of an excuse to post something weird on your partner’s Facebook detail anymore.
