Opera Download Numbers Double Thanks To The Introduction Of Choice Screen

The folks by at Opera must be smiling from ear to ear after Microsoft was forced to introduce the Windows Web Browser Choice Screen in Europe. The Web Browser Choice Screen prompts users whether they want to download competing browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera etc. Now Opera is reporting that the number of downloads has more than doubled across the European continent, with some countries even indicating that the download rate has tripled. According to the stats released, 53% of the downloads came from the Choice Screen, and considering that the Choice Screen was rolled out in early March, it certainly provides an interesting twist in the browser wars.

Mozilla Is checking Firefox explanation Manager

Mozilla Is evaluating Firefox detail Manager

Considering the open source nature of Firefox, it’s always fairly easy to guess and check out the new features that Mozilla is working on. Now it seems that Mozilla is planning a rather useful account manager, which should be particularly helpful to users who are logged into many sites at once. Initially, the support should include sites such as Facebook, Google and Yahoo!, not to mention 3 other Mozilla sites (Addons, Personas, and Bugzilla). With that in place, you’ll notice a key icon on your Firefox toolbar, and when you go on it, you’ll be able to check out the variety of sites that you’re currently logged into, and disconnect from any of them. Looks like you won’t have much of an excuse to post something weird on your partner’s Facebook detail anymore.

Rock Your Firefox Blog

Rock Your Firefox Blog

[SXSW] Yesterday, Mozilla launched its new blog “Rock Your Firefox”, featuring the coolest add-ons for Firefox, the popular open source browser. The first post featured Yoono, a social networking site aggregator and management tool that lets public chat or update their status in various social websites, and that, from the Firefox sidebar while they browse the web. The latest version (7.1) was released last month. I have not used Yoono in a while, it might now do the same job as Hootsuite in a smaller space (from the side bar instead of using the whole browser window); well, I have to check it. The second post  features Xsticky, a virtual sticky note add-on that lets you jot down thoughts and put them by any web page. Rock Your Firefox will be a good online info center to discover new adds-on quickly.

Google Chrome Ad campaign is Working: Market Share is Up

Google Chrome Ad campaign is Working: Market Share is Up

Google has been pushing its Chrome web browser very hard to the world: we have seen ads all by the place (USA, Asia and Europe) and all these efforts are getting some traction: Since April 2009, Chrome's market share has gone from 1.79% to 5.61%. Arguably, growing from 1.79% is not as difficult as growing from 20% or 60% but it is still a significant achievement, and it seems likely that Chrome will continue to gain market share considering it is a good browser.

I would be very curious to know what the cost of acquisition "per install" was, given the marketing blitz that Google has unleashed. The second thing is: what happens when the campaign stops?

Although Microsoft's World Wide Web Explorer share is decreasing steadily, each date a customer buys a new PC or does a fresh install of Windows, the game is “reset” back to having Microsoft's World Wide Web Explorer as the default browser. that is still an inherent advantage that Microsoft holds, and one that has been challenged in Europe – even whether most PC customers don’t know. Personally, I use Chrome along with Firefox, which is still my main browser considering of the Firefox plug-ins. What kind of user are you?

Firefox Mobile for Android could be next big thing

Firefox Mobile for Android could be next big thing

Firefox Mobile for the Android operating system could very well be the next big thing in terms of mobile software, but it might take some day for the final release to roll out considering a very different cipher base, as Android is built on Java while Firefox Mobile is developed in the C and C++ languages. Since the Open Handset Alliance offers support for native C and C++ cipher in the NDK, Mozilla is able to take the next step and roll out a committed version of Firefox Mobile for Android. When the date comes though, do you think Android-powered phone owners will move on to Firefox Mobile instead of sticking to the default Google-powered browser?

Google Ditching Support For Net Explorer 6

Google Ditching Support For Net Explorer 6

A few years back, ditching support for World Wide Web Explorer 6 (IE6) would probably have been deemed suicidal for any service, but with the popularity of Safari, Opera, Firefox, Chrome, and even IE7/IE8, life without IE6 won’t seem so poor to the majority out there anymore. It’s hard to be certain whether it’s related to the attacks that Google has recently come under, most likely via IE6, but as of March 1st, Google will no longer support IE6 on its Google Docs and Google Sites services. Considering that 13.5 percent of the web surfers are still using IE6, that move might be a good way to help bring awareness to the need to upgrade to a newer browser.
