Facebook Beats Google For The First Time

Facebook Beats Google For The First Time

Beating Google at anything is good news for any company, but dethroning Google as the most visited site in the US is certainly a feat that any company would trumpet. Who was the culprit? Well, it should be no surprise to anyone to take in that it’s Facebook. According to industry tracker Hitwise, Facebook enjoyed a healthy 185 percent increase in visits, while Google only got a 9 percent increase. That being said, the tracker did not include Google property sites such as Gmail, YouTube and Google Maps. It looks like Google has many challenges ahead of it, what with Facebook, Apple, Twitter and Microsoft all looking to dethrone the search engine giant on the Web.

Facebook To Launch Camera Friendly QR Codes?

Facebook To Launch Camera Friendly QR Codes?

Word is going around that Facebook could be examining the usage of QR codes on its site. In case you aren’t familiar, QR codes are like a 2D bar cipher for your mobile phone, allowing your phone to easily scan the QR cipher and get the knowledge. It seems that Facebook might use these QR codes for profile and status urls, which would probably come in handy whether you fiddle with Facebook a lot on your mobile phone (don’t we all?) Facebook hasn’t officially confirmed or denied that feature just yet, so it certainly seems like there could be a possibility of seeing that feature sometime in the future. whether it were to be implemented, it’ll be interesting to see how it will be used. An example would be businesses could use it to point customers to Facebook pages by embedding the QR codes in TVs and print ads.

Mozilla Is checking Firefox explanation Manager

Mozilla Is evaluating Firefox detail Manager

Considering the open source nature of Firefox, it’s always fairly easy to guess and check out the new features that Mozilla is working on. Now it seems that Mozilla is planning a rather useful account manager, which should be particularly helpful to users who are logged into many sites at once. Initially, the support should include sites such as Facebook, Google and Yahoo!, not to mention 3 other Mozilla sites (Addons, Personas, and Bugzilla). With that in place, you’ll notice a key icon on your Firefox toolbar, and when you go on it, you’ll be able to check out the variety of sites that you’re currently logged into, and disconnect from any of them. Looks like you won’t have much of an excuse to post something weird on your partner’s Facebook detail anymore.

Sobees For SXSW and MIX10

[SXSW] I saw Sobees for the first instance at DEMO 09, it is a social sites networks aggregator that looked pretty good when I saw the demo, it offered a monetization model via sort sponsorship. Today, the company launched Sobees for SXW and MIX10: the Sobees event applications aggregate Flickr photo stream, Google news, Twitter real day search, the official RSS feed from the event, the official Twitter messages from the event, your personal Twitter and Facebook accounts. Sobees partnered with Salsadev.com to supply the trending keywords within each conference, allowing to refine the search and finding news, photos and tweets related to the trending topics at SXSW and MIX10.

You can try the applications here (Silverlight 3 working on Macs and PCs for most browsers):

iPad Scams Surface On Facebook And Twitter

It was bound to happen, and it seems that scam sites are now riding the wave of anticipation of Apple’s upcoming iPad. Facebook and Twitter pages offering users to beta pop quiz the iPad are surfacing with headers such as “iPad Researchers Wanted – Want to beta analysis Apple’s latest product?” It all seems rather harmless, even when you see the pop-up window portraying to be a quiz, requesting data such as your moment of birth and cellphone number. According to a senior technology consultant at protection firm Sophos, the knowledge provided will them be used to sign you up for a premium rate cellphone service, which will charge you something like $10 a week until you unsubscribe. After Facebook’s defense team was notified about that, the page was disabled, but you can be certain that there will be similar pages that will sprout up the moment one goes down. So whether you see such pages, you’ll certainly want to tread carefully.

Google Snaps Up Picnik Online Photo Editor

If you’ve been toying around with online photo editors, you’ve probably chanced upon Picnik by now, which is the default online photo editor used by Flickr. Whether you’re a fan of Google or not, the reality is that the search engine giant has just snapped up the cloud-based photo editing site. In case you didn’t know, Picnik has already been integrated with third-party sites such as Flickr, Facebook and MySpace, but fortunately Google has said that it will continue to allow third-party sites to continue integrating with Picnik. Of course, that acquisition will certainly benefit Google’s own photo site, Picasa, in some way, and it’ll be interesting to see how Google plans to use the tech that it has just acquired.
