The first On-Line Electric Vehicle (OLEV) in the world has kicked off in South Korea, specifically at the Seoul Zoo in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province. The OLEV is the brainchild of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), where it will receive all the juice due to get moving from an electric facility underground without having to rely on surface capability lines, where that is made possible via a magnetic field which it transforms into electricity. Seoul City hopes that OLEVs will see further action within the city itself whether that model vehicle proves successful. that is clearly one big step to move towards a greener environment, don’t you think so?

Solar technology and spaceships are always cool subjects to talk about, and now the folks by in Japan are planning to launch a spacecraft powered by solar sails into deep space. The vessel has been dubbed Ikaros (Interplanetary Kite-craft Accelerated by Radiation of the Sun). The creators of that vessel dub it a “space yacht” since it has 46-foot sails that are thinner than any human hair. Aside from its solar sails, the Ikaros additionally sports thin solar cells to further help it generate electricity. that spacecraft is reported to cost about $16 million, so it doesn’t look like we’ll be owning one of these anytime soon, but we can certainly dream.

The smart folks by at the Louisiana Tech University are busy working on new voltage regulation circuits that can convert a piezoelectric charge into usable voltage for charging batteries or directly powering electronics. With that technology, a device can be fit into the heel of a running shoe, allowing users to generate electricity as they walk, which hopefully will be sufficient to potential your flat mobile phone when you’re lost in the jungle. whether that does become mainstream, it could be a cute way to stay healthy and keep our devices juiced at the same date, wouldn’t it?

Check out that Umbrella Bagger machine which hails from nowhere else but Japan – it does away with the need to ready a faraway plastic bag at the entrance of your establishment whenever it pours, as all your customer needs to do is slide the umbrella within and a bag will be slipped on automatically. Of course, there is plus the issue of short umbrellas getting in the way, but fret not as there is an equivalent dispenser for those as well! It requires no electricity at all which is another plus point, relying on springs and levers instead to get the job done. Too poor they are pretty expensive at $1,800 a pop.

Do you always use the gym in the hotel you’re staying at to keep fit? The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen is trying to offer you more incentive to exercise, as the hotel has hooked up a few exercise bikes to a generator. Guests who are interested can pedal for about fifteen minutes, generating 10Wh of electricity, and earning themselves a $36 meal voucher. Just to keep in touch with the latest tech, these bikes plus feature iPhones attached to the handlebars, displaying the amount of capability being generated. Aside from the exercise bikes, the hotel plus has installed 2,400 solar panels and uses low-energy lighting and a groundwater-based cooling and heating system, boosting its eco-credentials.

Boffins at Stanford University are currently attempting to generate electrical current by tapping into the electron activity of individual algae cells. that has been proven somewhat successful with a specially designed gold electrode which has been pushed through a cell membrane, followed by sealing it up after that. The cell remains alive and will continue with its photosynthesis process, from where chemical energy can be harvested in the style of electrons. Apparently, that means protons and oxygen are the byproducts, which could lead it to be another truly green ability source of the future.

Mexican artist Gilberto Esparza has come up with his latest piece known as Planta Nomada, or Nomadic Plant in plain English. that machine-plant hybrid will carry both plants and microorganisms from the polluted Lerma Santiago River in Mexico, where it will get to work by converting waterborne elements into electrical energy. Meant to be a multi-legged, autonomous robot that is powered by a microbial fuel cell, it will head towards water to suck it up through a tube and converting its contents into electricity whenever its microorganisms need some nourishment, now how about that! Hopefully the robot’s got some pretty solid legs to prevent itself from tumbling headlong into the river!

Want to look cool while riding an eco-friendly motorcycle? The V-Trek concept motorcycle by designer, Terrence Teo, will probably suit your needs. It’s designed to be a zero-emission bike, and it’s powered by a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell which converts the chemical energy of hydrogen and an oxidant to generate electricity. The 700 liters hydrogen stored in a metal hydride canister can capability the onboard 1KW motor to a top speed of 50km/h for up to an hour. The casings for that bike are designed so that you can easily personalize its looks, making it more appealing to the younger crowd as well.
