Folks who own a FiOS DVR and have installed Media Manager on the PC can hit the update button to take advantage of the latest additions, including support for YouTube and Web Radio. Those running on Macs are left out in the cold yet again though. Non-DVR users will be able to take advantage of Media Manager since it is now available to all FiOS customers, although we are left wondering as to why Media Manager is compulsory before Web substance can be streamed onto your computer. Nice to see we have yet another viewing option without having to go through input switching, considering the amount of set top boxes there are available at the moment.

SnapStream is talking about its new DVR appliance that can record up to 50 channels simultaneously onto 100TB worth of storage capacity. SnapStream is plus writing the software to control that monster (they used to be my favorite Media Center system considering they could record in DivX). that is equivalent to 326 Tivo Premier boxes, and it’s a closet-size box. In the back, a individual coax cable is the input for all that video composition. Arguably, the more interesting part is that SnapStream has tools to search the substance. Their system is used by TV show production teams that need to find recent footage quickly. The Daily Show uses their tech, apparently. Ironically, it’s more channels than are available in most countries. Specs in the full posts.

Folks living in Japan who own a Sony PS3 will be pleased to know that the company has given its nod of approval for a couple of 500GB external USB hard drives which are meant for console use only. The two are the Buffalo HD-AV500U2 (as seen above) and the HD-CL500U2, where they will hit other markets outside of Japan next month in order to coincide with the PS3′s “torne” DVR hardware/software combo launch. Neither drive comes with special features apart from being officially licensed products for the PS3, as these just come with an external label change and nothing else. Not precisely the way to win fans by to your cause, but whether you are willing to shell out anywhere from $130 to $165 for either of each device, next be our guest.

This garish looking device known as the GE 6-in-1 Universal DVR Remote will take some getting used to, considering the product design that is less than flattering, making it the Chrysler PT of remote controls at that moment. Well, mom always told us not to judge a book by its cover, so that “book” will have to be assessed via its functions, where you get a large cipher database, infrared cipher learning, a red LED button backlight, a new IR repeater with wired emitters and a button arrangement that was tailored for DVR users. Retailing for a relatively affordable $19.99, that is something worth looking into whether you’re into a cheap universal DVR remote to replace your older one that was chewed up by Fido.
