If you’re a gamer that purchases original non-pirated games (like we all should), thereupon you’re probably familiar with the troublesome DRM (digital rights management) features that are stuffed into games in order to circumvent piracy. Ubisoft’s always-on DRM solution, the Online Services Network, has been criticized by many folks, as it requires gamers to have a constant connection to the World Wide Web in order to play their games. Now hackers have managed to circumvent the DRM in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed 2 game, allowing users to enjoy the game without having to concern about the DRM mechanism. Hacks to get around Ubisoft’s DRM servers were available before that, but they used a less efficient way to do it. Of course, we’re not advocating piracy, but it’ll be interesting whether there will be some middle ground that game developers will be able to work out with gamers. After all, everybody just want to enjoy the game, right?

Another day, another ebook reader – that date round with Paradigm Shift offering their EER-051D model. Why must they come up with such a convoluted model name is anyone’s guess, but we would definitely prefer something that is a whole lot easier to roll off the tongue. That aside, the EER-051D ships with a 5″ color display, an integrated FM tuner, MP3 and photo playback, 2GB of internal memory, an SD memory card slot as well as the ability to handle most popular e-book formats without excluding DRM-enabled ePub books to boot. Expect that to be rebadged in other iterations and hit the US sometime next week.

Sony has rolled out its latest NWZ-W252 W-Series Walkman MP3 player that is fully wearable, making it an instant favorite with those who have a penchant for listening to encouraging tunes while they sweat it out at the gym. The NWZ-W252 comes in a convenient lightweight, wearable and water resistant design, where you will be able to continue jogging or cycling even when the heavens open up and start to pour down water. Apart from that, the Walkman W-Series additionally ships with composition Transfer software that enables users’ to transfer music files and playlists straight from a PC or iTunes library (DRM files excluded). It comes with a measly 2GB maximum capacity which is a far cry from other MP3 players these days, but thereupon again unless you’re running a marathon, you won’t be needing that much space, do you? The Sony NWZ-W252 W-Series Walkman MP3 player will be released later that month for approximately $60 a pop.

Microsoft has already made some inroads with Silverlight (a technologie competing with Adobe Flash) in choose web media outlets, but at NAB, the company will try to sell Silverlight for set top boxes. The concept is to run Silverlight on low-power processors such as those found in your cable box to bring video composition with digital rights management (DRM) to your TV. You can guess that whether that works, it would create a great entry for Microsoft in the broadcasting world, and down the road, you can expect to get the same services on other Silverlight-compatible platform: mobile, PC and Mac. considering set top boxes are self-contained, users don’t really know (and care) about what technology powers them, so it might be easier to get a win there. Now the question is: will broadcaster be convinced? What do you think?
The Mustek MER-6T ebook reader is ready to hit the market, where it comes with a 800 x 600 resolution black-and-white display, supporting a wide range of ebook formats such as PDF (Free/DRM), ePub (Free/DRM), TXT, RTF, FB2, PRC,/MOBI and HTML. The built-in 2GB memory is capable of holding up to 1,600 books, but good thing you can carry more digital tomes with you thanks to its expandable memory. No word on pricing or availability, but we do wonder whether other ebook manufacturers are quaking in their boots as Apple prepares the iSlate/iTablet – with all the hype surrounding Apple’s rumored upcoming device, you would think that that is all the world can think about.

An online store is a big thing thanks to the iTunes’ unprecedented success on a global scale, and Sony doesn’t want to lose out on that potentially lucrative market whether executed rightly, having announced plans to roll out an online portal for music, movies, books and other subject matter including applications. The new Sony Online Service is supposed to assist the company in hitting Apple where it hurts – iTunes. Hopefully they won’t introduce all the crap DRM and proprietary formats in the process.
