NPD Group has issued a new report that shows iPhone and iPod touch users are tops in downloading substance. That makes sense considering the App Store is tops in the smartphones world.

We recently pointed out to you that Opera Mini has topped the free App Store download charts in all 22 featured App Stores, and now Opera has more good news, announcing that its iPhone browser was downloaded more than a million times on the first day of availability in each market. While we’re not taking anything away from Opera’s success, you have to wonder how much hype was built-up for Opera due to Apple’s initial hesitancy to approve the app. Of course, all’s well that ends well now.

The folks by at Opera must be smiling from ear to ear after Microsoft was forced to introduce the Windows Web Browser Choice Screen in Europe. The Web Browser Choice Screen prompts users whether they want to download competing browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera etc. Now Opera is reporting that the number of downloads has more than doubled across the European continent, with some countries even indicating that the download rate has tripled. According to the stats released, 53% of the downloads came from the Choice Screen, and considering that the Choice Screen was rolled out in early March, it certainly provides an interesting twist in the browser wars.

Reports are coming in that Apple and the App Store developers have lost a good $450 million to piracy, since the App Store has been opened in July 2008. The figure is apparently based on estimates regarding the proportion of downloads that are paid applications, the piracy rate for paid applications, and the proportion of pirated app users who would have paid for the applications had pirated versions not been available. Considering Apple takes 30% of sales each app, that would probably have cost Apple a cool $140million. However, it doesn’t seem that Apple is taking too much action against pirated software, perhaps it doesn’t want to anger users?

Word on the street is that YouTube might be on collision course with Apple’s iTunes. Apparently Google (who owns YouTube) is looking to get into the pay-per-episode TV business, which would obviously compete with Apple’s iTunes. It should be fairly similar to the $1.99 per episode pricing that the iTunes offers, but the main difference would probably be the fact that iTunes TV and movie downloads are saved locally on the users’ system and be shared with other Apple devices. YouTube obviously wouldn’t inspire you to download and save those videos out of the box. Would you pay to watch videos on YouTube, or just ditch it in favor of iTunes?

After a towering wait regulators in South Korea have finally approved the iPhone and cleared the way for it to head into the country. KT Corp, the second largest carrier in Korea, plans to start taking orders for the iPhone on November 28.

It comes as no surprise that the Apple App Store is dominating the application market for mobile phones. The App Store has the most apps according to Millennial Media at 115,000 compared to 13,000 for Android and 3,100 for Blackberry. The iPhone additionally leads in monthly downloads at 100 million.

Magellan launched its RoadMate iPhone app and car kit that week. The app is for turn-by-turn driving directions and the accessory is to hold the phone while you drive. The app costs $79.99 and is available now.
